More than 23 million people across North and South America have seen the internationally acclaimed show since it began touring in 1970. This year's all- new production is called "Symphony in White." -^ The stallions have a storied history, tracing their roots back to the 16th century when the noble breed was developed for use in warfare by Austria's royal house of Hapsburg. Festival organizers have a mountain of events on tap, ranging from a group of Buddhist monks performing sacred music and dance from Tibet to public readings by nationally known Wesat Virginia novelist, Denise Giardina. "The Cullowhee Arts Festival embraces the theme of 'Community of Scholars' through interdisciplinary events on a common theme," said Robert Kehrberg, head of the WCU music department and fesival director. "It combines presentations by WCU students and faculty along with regional, national and international guests." All events are free of charge and will "It has always seemed to me that boys & girls are educated differently. Even from the early grades, they take different subjects. For instance, boys are usually put into woodworking classes, and girls into sewing or cooking—willy, nilly. I know many boys who should, I am sure, be making pies and girls who are much better fitted for manual training than domestic science. Too often little attention is paid to individual talent." Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) In 1993, Amelia Earhart became the "First Lady of the Air" when she earned the firstpilotlicense ever issued toa woman. Before her disappearance in 1937, Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and the first woman to fly around the world. Women's } History \ Month Utilize past to^£ realize dreams "So March is Women's History Month, but what is the history of Women's History Month? In 1981, at the request of Congress, PresidentReagan signed into law US Public Law 101.6 which officially designated March as National Women's History Month. A proclamation was then issued requesting that all people of the United States observe March with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The body of the law recognizes the contributions that women of every race, class and ethnic background have made to the growth and strength of the nation. It states the importance of the roles these women have played as part of the labor force (paid & unpaid), as volunteers, as leaders, as philanthropists, as fomenters of social change and as politicians. The law also highlights the fact that "despite the contributions, the role of American women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in the literature, teachingand studyof American history." It is for this reason that Congress passed US Public Law 101.6.
