  • 8 Features February 17, 1994 Western Carolinian m ymsw mi Colleen Vasconcellos Staff Reporter Madeline Stowe and Aidan Quinn star in "Blink," this year's newest thriller. Stowe stars as a blind woman who has partially her sight through a corneal transplant operation. Stowe, who had been blind sinceageeight, finds itdifficulttoadjusttohernewly restored sight due to her limited depth-perception. Also, half of what she sees is delayed. That is, she doesn't see it until the next day. Soon after her operation, while sleeping in her apartment, Stowe is disturbed by noises upstairs and outside hor door. She opens the door to see the extremely blurred vision of a man going down the stairs. Thinking it is the janitor, Stowe goes back to bed. The next morning, Stowe rises early and begins her day. Walking to another room of her apartment, Stowe is startled by a man standing directly in front of her. Turning away sharply, the man seems to move, once again facing her. Realizing the man she saw during the night was not the janitor, Stowe rushes up the stairs to the apartment above her. Her next stop is the police station. Quinn stars as the homicide detective assigned to her. He listens patiently to her story but finds it hard to believe her. Stowe is kindly laughed out of the police station. Theviewerisnextwhiskedtoacrimescene. Quinnis investigating the newest murder in a string of serial killings. The young woman had been strangled in her apartment, then raped (yes....after she was dead) and placed into a full bath with her wrists slit. Searching for some answers, Quinn goes to the apartment below, and a not-too- surprised Stowe opens the door. With the rest of the homicide department thinking Quinn is crazy, he begins to believe Stowe's story. Stowe is made the prime witness, which moves her into the line as the killer's next victim. "Blink" is an excellent movie full of suspense, with the viewer constantly jumping out of his/her seat. Stowe and Quinn give wonderful performance. I give "Blink" threp and a half stars. "I got my undergraduate and graduate degrees from University of North Texas in music theory and a minor in piano. My job here is Director of the Music Technology Program. I also teach Music Theory, MIDI and other classes." What is MIDI? "MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. The main idea is joining computers and musical instruments together. It's very common in production and the recording of music these days. We have four majors. Ifs part of the BS ed music curriculum, and there seems to be a large interest outside of the music department based on the numbers in my night classes." So, whafs new with you? "Well, I've been working on an album with a group called Dallas Brass. Ill be playing keyboards on the album and co-producing it I wrote six of fhel2tunes. Dallas Brass has been together 11 or 12 years, put three albums out already and have premiered two of my pieces at the Kennedy Center and two in Milwaukee. Digital libraries bringing new information into a "virtual" world Joseph Shiver Staff Reporter It is hard to turn on the television anymore without seeing commercials advertising all of the upcoming technologies of tomorrow. Interactivity is already quickly becoming a buzz word for the information superhighway. The cable television industry is trying to push Congress to change current FCC standards and regulations so a 500 channel cable television system will become an actual reality not just a "virtual" one. Are all these technological advances really that far off? Some say "no, they are not." Enter in Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Emory University received a $300,OW grant from the Luce Foundation located in New York City to start developing a virtua library. A virtual library would be a library where all the books, documents, and $°u*^f of a normal library would be transferred to digitized computer information that could accessed by students via a personal computer and a telephone line. Emory, Harvard, an Yale University are all working together to design this "Virtual Library." This is being done to minimize the headaches that usually go along with such a mind boggling task organizing an entire library of information onto a computer system. . This system would also greatly minimize the headaches of research that norrna^y plague students in libraries of today. For instance, one doing a specific paper on Harvard school of law could enter into fhecomputer system and instantly be in the LiW ^y at Harvard while using a computer in Cullowhee without even having to leave medVj room. Another great feature is the convenience of being able to enter a specific toP'c have an entire book instantly scanned to see if thereare any matches. This would save and trouble not to mention providing an invaluable amount of information thatcurr®" ^ wouldhavenotbeenavailable. Therearealsotheadvantagesof nothavingtowaitfor books and materials to be processed intolibrarycirculationorthehighcostsofbuymg replacing books. t Already Columbia University is scanningand digitizing 10-20,000 books per yearou of the more than 750,000 that exist in its collection. The University of Florida, Vn™*J. of Southern California, Carnegie Melon University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers uru sity of New Jersey are all also working on "Virtual Libraries."
