TO-GO l^S ' PIZaZ A " O GO Chinese Culture to be explored in new course Jafaar Nyang'oro StaffReporter Western Carolina University will offer an up-close and personal view of China during the coming Spring Semester through a course entitled "International Forum: China." The 15-week long course, being offered for the second time, will address different academic disciplines. The subjects to be covered include geography, art, literature, history, biology, politics, economics, business and religion. Each session of the course (USI395) will be led by a different WCU faculty member with expertise or experience in China. According to Jeff Neff, WCU associate professor of geosciences and anthropology, the two-credit hour course, part of WCU's interdisciplinary studies program is open to juniors and seniors. Classes are scheduled to meet Tuesdays from 6 to 8 pm in room 180 of the McKee building. The course, coordinated by the Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence, will use a text book entitled Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China. This is actually a story explaining the experience of a woman who lived in the transition period from the Nationalist to Communist rules in China in the second quarter of the 20th century. Dr. Jeff Neff highlighted that the objective of this course is to provide an intensive expose of China. It is believed that roughly one of every five of the world's citizens lives in China. This Asian country is also credited to have the world's oldest continuous civilization, stretching back almost 5,000 years into the mists of time. "Therefore, we have every reason to know China and the Chinese better than we do," Neff concluded. However, it should be noted that this is a mere starting point in a long way for the department of geosciences and anthropology towards offeringdifferentcourses aimed at exposure to different countries and cultures. Other countries in consideration include, but are not limited to, the Middle East, Russia and Japan. WCU Bookstore ATTENTION! Have you rented textbooks?
