  • Page 24 Sports September 30,1993 Western Carolinian Thigpen: "Athletics is my life" Derek Smolik StaffReporter Whatkeeps a person in sports? Isitan intense love of the game? Could it be a desire to be the best you can be? Or maybe it'sjust the right kind of mindset forsports? Well, running back, Kevin Thigpen, corn- Kevin Thigpen at a recent football game, (photo by Justin Menickelli) bines all of these qualities into one package as he strives to be all that he can. The 5'10, 186 pound senior from Sarasota, Florida, has played team sports since he was eight years old. He was number two on the Cats all-time rushing list with 2,389 yards going into the 1993 season. This is despite the fact that he has had to play hindered by injuries almost his entire career at Western. His sophomore year he sprained his ankle and was slowed down the rest of the season by that injury but was able to gain 793 yards on 182 carries. Last season he was averaging over 118 yards a game before he suffered a groin injury that limited his playing time the rest of the season. He still became the first Cat since 1977 to rush for over 1,000 yards. His expectations are higher for this season. "My personal goal is to try to break the all-time rushing record for Western Carolina. My coach, at the beginningof the season, said I needed 1,600 yards to do that," said Thigpen when asked about what he would like to do this season. Thigpen's tremendous sense of responsibility was one of the factors that kept him playing even when hurt last season. Thigpen felt that he was letting down his teammates by not playing while he was injured. "It was very frustrating for me, but I felt that the team really needed me to perform and play. I felt that I was obligated to play. I felt that I was helping the team, so I pretty much took it easy during the week. 1 didn't practice quite as hard as the others, and I tried to be ready for Saturday," Thigpen stated. Teammate (and roommate) Kyle McNeely expressed that Thigpen's attitude helps him in his game and in overcoming his own injuries. "Kevin was very disappointed because of his injuries. I think that he was thinking that he was letting us down more than anything," McNeely said about the times Thigpen was injured. "Kevin is the most laid back person I know. I think that it helps him in his game. I think that it helps him to focus on his game." Thigpen was involved in more than just football in high school. He played four sports for Sarasota High. As a member of the wrestling team, Thigpen went to the State Championships. He was also the number three ranked weight lifter for his class in the state. While he also enjoyed running track and field, he admitted that there was an ulterior motive involved. "Well, track was mainly to keep in shape for football," Thigpen said. "I also! like tennis; I never played on a tennisj team, but I always liked the sport." Whataboutthefuture? Well, Thigpen didn't want to talk much about it. He said' that his focus was solely on this season and that he has high hopes for the team to win their firstnational championship. But he did say that there's always the chance for life after college football. "I figure by my hard work and dedication on the football field and whatever success I may have (that) if I do get an opportunity to play on a higher level, I might consider taking that opportunity," Thigpen admitted. For the time being Thigpen is looking more seriously at his chosen field of Sports Management. He admitted that it would be hard for him to do something that did not involve sports in some way. "Athletics is pretty much my life. It's been like that as long as I can remember. (I would like) any type of job dealing with recreation. Whether it's working at a YMCA or a Boy's Club or country club or anything like that. Any of those things I feel that my major would help me with," he said. Note: Thigpen underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee to take care of an injury that has been bothering him this season.
