  • Page 8 Features September 30,1993 Western Carolinian Suspenseful Striking Distance keeps viewers1 interest Colleen Vasconcellos Staff Writer Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker star as two cops trying to find a serial killer in the action-packed thriller, "Striking Distance." The movie opens in 1991 where Willis and his father, also a cop, are on their way to the Police Ball. A call comes in on the radio announcing that a high speed chase is in progress in the area. Willis and his father drop the Ball and immediately join the chase. The viewers are automatically caught up in the chase, feeling as if they were in the car with Willis. After narrow turns and accidents, the suspect is cornered, Setting the stage for 1993-94 theatre season Kim Miller Staff Writer The stage is set for the 1993-94 theatre season at WCU, with a fast-paced British comedy, a haunting adults-only drama, a popular musical and a theatrical masterpiece on the playbill. Four "mainstage" productions are on tap, along with a series of one-act plays directed by and starring Western's top theatre students. They will start the season in early October with "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde. This comedy pokes fun at the strange behavior of the well-to-do in turn-of-the-century London. It has been called by critics perhaps the funniest play of all time. Directed by Stephen Michael Ayers, the play will be produced October 5-9. The drama "Woyzech" by Georg Burchner is next, hi tting the stage November 16-20. The disturbing work by Burchner, a series of vignettes, was unfinished at the time of his death. Because of mature situations and violence, this show is suggested for adult audiences only. "Woyzech" will be directed by Roger Bright. Western's theatre arts and music programs will team up for the musical "Pi- "Theatre" See pg. 10 WCU BOOKSTORE and the viewer can breathe a sigh of relief. But not for long, because the suspect escapes, and the chase resumes with only Willis and his father involved. The two cars run amuck in the city, soon coming to a sharp curve. Not able to make the curve, the two cars go over the side. Both cars are in a horrible accident, leaving Willis and his father unconscious. When Willis comes to, the suspect has escaped, and his father has been shot in the head. Willis recovers, only to face his cousin's trial for police brutality, of which Willis is a large part of the prosecution. Willisgoes to the sentencingbut is shunned by his family and fellow policemen. His cousin doesn't show up for the sentencing and is later tracked down at a bridge where he is about to jump. Willis goes to persuade his cousin not to jump, once again shunned by family and friends. However, he is unsuccessful; his cousin jumps, and Willis is blamed. The movie then leaps to the present. Willis is an alcoholic but still a cop. However, he has left homicide and is now with River Rescue. Sarah Jessica Parker comes into play, cast as Willis' new partner. While on patrol, Willis and Parker get a call. Rushing to the scene, they find a murder victim floating in the water. This shakes Willis up, for the victim closely resembles the victims of the serial killings in 1991. This is important, because those killings led to the high speed chase which caused the death of Willis' father. Not to mention, the victim was atone time Willis' girlfriend. More victims show up, all found by Willis and Parker. It is almost as if the killer wants Willis to find the bodies. The serial killings have taken on a new twist. All of the victims have at one time dated Willis. Willis sets out to find the killer and solve the case. Little does he know, Parker may soon be the next victim. "Striking Distance" is a great movie, full of action and suspense. The viewers stay on the edge of their seats, often holding their breath in anticipation. Always guessing, the viewer is stunned to see who the actual killer is. Here's a little hint, just guess everyone. Then you can't be wrong. Don't worry about looking stupid. By the end of the movie everyone looks guilty, even Willis. I give "Striking Distance" threeanda half stars. It is full of action and suspense and never boring. The viewer cannot possibly lose interest in this movie. FRONT DESK 1-800-654-3315 Features Of Our Inn The conference room accommodates up to 200.
