  • Western Carolinian September 16,1993 Sports Page 17 Cats "set" for season Lance Hill, Sigma Phi Epsilon, takes a back hand swing during his final round. (Photo by Tracy McLamb) Tennis finals held Monday Derek Smolik StaffReporter Lance Hill won the men's singles title; Kevin Andrews and Chris Henry won the men's doubles title, and Stephanie Morris and Laura Parker won the women's doubles title in the Intramural Tennis Tournament over this past week. Hill, of Sigma Phi Epsilon, beat Ryan Stone, the Independent Champion, to win the All-Campus Championship. In the men's doubles finals, Andrews and Henry beat Nelson Stephenson and Scott Masten to take the overall title. Morris and Parker, members of Phi Mu, were the Sorority Seeded Champions and won the All-Campus Championship. Derek Smolik Staff Reporter Despite a third place finish last year, three returning starters, two returning letter winners, and a first ever chance to play in the NCAA tournament, Western Carolina's volleyball team still has some big questions going into the 1993 season. The Cats return three very strong players in Jennifer Ross, Kristen Baxter and Emily Tillotson, as well as letter winners, Rebecca Ballard and Catherine Sawyers. But three starters, Katherine Thomas (team leader in digs, second in kills), AnnMarie Alvarez (starting setter for the last three years) and Angell Kirkpatrick (three year starter), all graduated, leaving Head Coach Trish Howell some holes to fill. Howell has had to do some shuffling with the lineup because of injuries. Baxter was moved from setter, and Freshman Tricia Savoia took her place. Howell expressed confidence in the players ability to fill unfamiliar positions, but she still expressed some concern about the injuries going into the season with a tough early season schedule. "Our inexperience is our biggest concern. Traveling is not a problem, but we have some tough opponents. (It's) better to take our lumps, if any, early than late," Howell said. Some cause for optimism, though is the fact that the conference schedule does not start until October 6, but the Cats will not be seeing the friendly confines of Reid Gym until October, as well. East Tenessee State, second in the regu- lar season and the conference tournament winner, should be strong again this year. Appalachian State was the regular season title winner but was decimated by graduation and will have a tough time of it this season. Howell feels that her team can once again compete for the Southern Conference title this season despite the injuries they have suffered. "I see the conference leader as ETSU. They are returning a lot of talent. I see us as being able to compete. Right now, I would put us in the 3, 4, or 5 spot (in the conference)." An added bonus for conference teams this year will be the first-ever opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament. The NCAA Tournament was expanded to 48 teams this year, and the Southern Conference was extended an automatic berth. According to Howell, no Southern Conference school has ever been invited to the NCAA tournament before. RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS MY DEGREE GOT ME THE INTERVIEW. ARMY ROTC GOT ME THE JOB. Things got pretty competitive for this job. I'm sure my college degree and good grades kept me in the running. But in the end it was the leadership and management experience I got through Army ROTC that won them over. Army ROTC taught me responsibility, self- discipline and leadership. Those are things you just can't leam from a textbook. I don't know where I'd be right now if I hadn't enrolled in Army ROTC, but I do know one thing for sure... I wouldn't be here.
