Editorials WC needsfeedback from Danell Moses Editor readers, non-readers EDITORIAL Another school year is now a few- weeks underway, and routine has probably set in for you. I would like to suggest another routine for you to adopt. Why not pick up a Western Carolinian every week and browse through it. If something sparks your interest, write us about it. If nothing sparks your interest, you should definitely write to us and let us know! I am not trying to sound "cheesy." The WC staff puts a lot of long, hard hours into each and every issue. If it isn't appealing to the students then we're not doing our job very well. Brett Ferguson Staff Reporter I put that survey in the first issue to see what people's first impressions were of the new style. I got 5 responses. That's pathetic. I'm running it again this week and hope to get back all 4000! If you don't care about the paper, that's fine. I can't believe from all the remarks I've heard in the past that that's the case. One thing I would like to clarify is in response to one survey that we received back. A reader wrote that the newspaper is an "Administration puff piece and that the editor should be fired." I hope you don't find the paper a puff piece this year, and I am a new editor. Thanks for the concern though - at least you replied! Some of the newer things you might want to notice this week are the addition ofconcertdates to the calendar. Wewould also like to start some sort of organiza tional page and not only write stories about the different organizations on campus but also have something listing the important events going on within those organizations. If your group would like to be included in this, assign someone to send in a brief, weekly update to us and we'll try to get something going. We're also still in need of news writers and editorial writers. The communications and journalism majors should be very interested in being published and others may just have a flair for writing! Please, don't be shy! I would like to mention that I think the underground papers are very interesting and would like to get a copy sent to the office, if that is possible or even plausible! 'Til next week take care, and I hope to hear from you soon. Honestly, is honesty dead or not? EDITORIAL Honesty, now there's a word that seems to have been dead since used car salesmen appeared. Honesty is a concept that most people don't feel is around anymore. Honesty is so inconceivable for some people that they don't see any need to be honest themselves, which only perpetuates the problem. It used to be that everyone was expected and presumed to be honest. Now, because of everything from politicians who don't appear to mean anything they say to certain church officials who portray the same Christ-like attitude as Lucifer, most people go through life expecting everyone they meet to be dishonest. This negative attitude breeds distrust and social tension, which we see a lot of every day. "Whatelsecan we do?", you ask. I like the attitude given by the Family Channel slogan, "ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE. ELIMINATE THE NEGATIVE!" Two cases: One late afternoon, these two guys rushed from the pouring rain into the retail store where I work. They explained that they were going camping that evening and that they needed food for the trip. I asked one of them what they Were going to use for shelter. He explained to me that all they had was a sheet of clear plastic, but that he needed to go camping so bad, he wasn't afraid of getting wet. I felt so sorry for them (having spent a few wet nights in the woods myself), that I offered them the camping tarp I had in my car. They gratefully accepted it and promised to return it WESTERN CAROLINIAN SUBSCRIPTION OFFER The Western Carolinian is available by subscription for $1.00 per issue. Case two: Two weeks ago, again at work, this f el low wal ked uptothecounterwith some groceries. When they were totaled, he came up about 80 cents short. He started to put something back, but I told him that I would loan him a dollar. He thanked me and said he would pay me back. After my experience with the tarp, I never expected to see him again. As a matter of fact, I forgot about the dollar entirely. About a week later this guy walked up to the counter pulls out a dollar and said, "Here man, I owe you a dollar." I didn't recognize him at first. He reminded me, "Last week you loaned me a dollar, and I'm here to pay it back." I thanked him and went on with business, but I wish that I had told him how much his honesty meant to me. Too often in life we emphasize negative things that happen to us and forget about the positive ones. If someone isn't honest with us, we should just shrug it off and understand that they are just a product of their environment. The times we should remember are those when someone goes outof their way to be honest with us, even when they don't have to. We'll be a lot happier. Honesty is not dead, and neither should be positive thinking. I'd still like to have my tarp back though.
