Speech pathology program accredited Amy Seeley StaffWriter As of Aug. 1, the graduate program in communications disorders received accreditation in speech- language pathology. The accreditation by the Educational Standards Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association will be valid for a five year period and then be reevaluated for renewal. ASHA representatives visited and determined that the graduate communications disorders program of WCU met and exceeded the 34 standards established by the organization. The program enrolls 36 graduate and 55 undergraduate students whose schooling will allow them to pursue a variety of occupations. Graduates of WCU's masters degree program are recruited to work in public schools, hospitals, reha bilitation centers, private practices and other settings. Western is only one of five universities in North Carolina that has an accredited masters degree program, therefore it is a strict and disciplined course of study. Students are required to complete (in addition to a general education program) a variety of speech and language classes, over 25 hours observing professionals in their field, and over 250 hours of clinical practice. Students complete their Godfrey's "Little 500" displayed James Gray StaffWriter Robert Godfrey, head of Western Carolina's art department, will have a series of 500 printings collectively known as "The Little 500" on display at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngs- tdwn, Ohio starting Oct. 4. The paintings, all with a width of 14 inches or less, were created between 1990 and 1992. They are an exploration of themes that Godfrey has incorporated into his work in a "journey into new concepts." The recurring ideas of this body of work are primarily the associations made with fire and water in myths from around the world. The display is part of the BuUer Institute's celebration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. Godfrey's work focuses on the fire and water folklore and mythology of Ireland and Africa. Godfrey has effectively interpreted the connections of fire and water with sexuality, fertility, wind and regeneration. For more information about these themes, Godfrey cites the book Psychoanalysis of Fire by the mid- 20th century French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. "The Little 500" has captured the idea of a journey not only for its creator, but also for the viewers. The body of paintings in toto (the whole) shows the progression of man through time. It also shows how we can make our going into the future much easier—through hard work and self-dedication. These qualities are shown by the size of work produced in a short period of time. ""The Little 500' can be viewed singularly as an intimate individual aria, or as a complete corpus with the viewer stalking and retracing meandering, yet comprehensive, visions," said Godfrey. The Butler Institute will be showing "The Little 500" through Nov 22. The work is expected to become a traveling exhibition after its display at the Butler Institute. observations and clinical experience at the Speech and Hearing Center on WCU's campus. The center provides out-patient diagnostic, treatment, and consultive services as well as outreach clinics in Cherokee, Haywood and Swain counties. Graduates of the curriculum can then proceed to the scientific study of human communication and its disorders of speech, language and hearing. The outstanding features listed by the ASHA include faculty dedication, administrative support, excellent reputation and diversity of clinical placement to students. "This accreditation is an official recognition regarding the quality of Western's academic and clinical program for the masters degree in communication disorders,"said David Shapiro, WCU Program Director and associate professor. "Endorsement by ASHA recognizes that Western's program adheres to the highest principles in professional preparation."
