GlenvilleStateofWest Virginia, a team loaded with British imports, won the two-day, 36-hole tournament Rick DeMott led WCU's effort in the Greensboro tournament with a 36-hole score of 147. The senior from Greensboro who played his prep golf at Enka High turned in outstanding rounds of 73 and 74 and finished only four strokes out of first place. Justin Free (Fr.; Tiger, GA) turned in a 78- 76=154 card. Drew Lindsey (Fr.; Parrish, FL) was a stroke behind at 74-81=155. Wood Harvey (So.; Asheville, NC), with a 79- 78=157 card and Kevin Kiger (So.; Conover, NC), 78- 83=161, rounded out the scoring for WCU. Johnny Wike, who returned as WCU's golf coach last fall after a lapse of 20 years, called the; Catamounts' performance in Greensboro "encouraging." "That is as good as we have played in years away from our home courses. I am pleased with those kind of scores this early in the season," he noted WCU will play in The Citadel Invitational at the Dunes West course in ML Pleasand, S.C, on Mar. 20-21. "Player-of-the-Year" from PG. 8 Seven days later Boyd turned in a 37-point performance against The Citadel in Charleston. Boyd connected on 63 percent of his shots, including 55 percent from various spots in and around Charleston. Boyd finished up the season with another stellar performance against Appalachian. He scored 33 points against the Mountaineers, sinking 50 percent of his shots and connecting on 40 percent of his longdistance calls. Boyd's next task comes at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament where he will be under the close scrutiny of coaches and scouts throughout the NBA. "That's a big honor," Boyd said. "I'm really glad they invited me." "Right now I' m working on myballhandlingandpassing," Boyd added. "I've got a good opportunity to show them what I can do." "Coaches and scouts from every team in the NBA will be there watching those recrui table players," Blatt added. "They [the scouts] know who he is," Blatt said. "They've heard of Terry Boyd and they've watched him play." "Terry's offensive abilities have been his strength" Blatt pointed out. "When he gets hot, he's a sight to see. He can score any number of ways: The pull-up jumper, 3-pointers from NBA range, and when he sees daylight he can take it to the basket." "He's left a lot of fond memories and highlights from his careeratWestern,"Blatt concluded. "He's obviously been an outstanding player who will be tough to replace." Hunting quote of the week... "You do not want you second, third, and fourth shots fall into knee high grass when something large and angry is about to come over and settle your differences in a meaningful way." David E.
