On fourth and five WCU attempted a fake punt which was foiled by UTC, who took over on their own 40 yard line. UTC could not gain on their next possession either and had to punt from the 47. Tudor's punt, which rolled into the endzone, was good for 48 yards. WCU took over on their own 20 and advanced to midfield before having to punt. away. UTC then took over on their own 20 and advanced behind good running from Roberts. Roberts gained 49 yards in three plays. One play was good for 40 yards. UTC could get no farther than the WCU 21, however, as Western's defense toughened. On fourth and six, Allen attempted a 38 yard field goal which was no good. WCU took over on their own 21, but on third and 13, Smith was intercepted by UTC. A Chattanooga clipping penalty on the return brought the ball back to Western's 40 yard line. From WCU's 40, UTC advanced to the 10 behind running by Roberts, Shamsid-Deen, and Smith. On fourth and two, Allen kicked a 27 yard field goal to put Mocs on top 23-21. WCU got the ball back on their own 45 with only a minute and 56 seconds to play. Western then converted fourth and one to advance totheUTC45. On second and nine, Lonnie Galloway ran for 11 yards to the 33. However, Thigpen and Galloway were dropped for losses on the next two downs to bring up third and 14, from the 37. Western set up for a 54 yard field goal attempt but a bobbled snap forced Mark Smith to scramble to avoid being sacked. On the ensuing hail mary pass, Smith's throw was intercepted by UTC's Jackie Washington ending Western's chances, and the game, 23-21. "I was pleased with the players' efforts. They played a hard and physical game. I was proud with the way they hung in there and fought back," said Catamount head coach Steve Hodgin. "If a couple of calls had gone our way, the outcome of the game would have been different." "Right now we are focusing on our third down conversions. Hopefully, by the Marshall game we will have corrected these mistakes, " Hodgin added. Tournament Time is Here Lady Cats are seeded third Western Carolina University's volleyball team is hoping to reverse a trend and at the same time restore a tradition when it hosts the Belk/Southern Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament this weekend, November 9,10,11. The three-day tournament will be played this Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon in WCU's Reid Gymnasium. A daily admission of $2.00 for non- studentadults and $1.00 for students of all ages will be charged. A three- day pass can be purchased and is priced at $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. The tournament will begin Fridayat5p.m. in Reid Gymnasium when East Tennessee State, the No. 4 seed, meets the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the No. 5 seed. Western Carolina, the No. 3 seed, will face Marshall, the No. 6 seed, in Friday's second game at 7:30 p.m. The semi-final round will be played Saturday evening beginning at 5 p.m. when the top seed and regular season champion Appalachian State meets the winner of Friday's matchup between East Tennessee State and UT-Chattanooga. Furman, the No. 2 seed, will play at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the WCU - Marshall match. The championship match will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. between the winners of Saturday evening's matches. The final regular season Southern Conference standings had Appalachian State on top with an 8- 2 record. Furman was second at 7- 3 followed by Western Carolina (6- 4), East Tennessee State (4-6), UT- Chattanooga (4-6) and Marshall (1 - 9). Despite the lack of success by the host teams in the history of the tournament, Trish Howell, WCU's coach of nine seasons, says she is "looking forward to hosting the tournament." The host team has won only one of the seven tournaments. The Lady Cats hosted the 1984 tournament and lost to Appalachian State in the championship match. "This is shaping up to be the most competitive tournament we have had," said Howell. "No one was dominant during the regular season." WCU has won three of the seven tournaments and has been in the championship match in all but one of the previous seasons. Last season, East Tennessee State and Western Carolina tied for the regular season title and ETSU defeated WCU in a thrilling five-game tournament championship match which was played in Johnson City, Tennessee. Howell is optimistic about her team's chance to bring the championship trophy back to Cullowhee for the first time since 1986. "Our chances are good, we have beaten everyone except Appalachian State and we are playing better than when we lost to them. I think we are peaking at the right time," she stated. The Lady Cats ended regular season play wilh a 21-10 record which includes 11 wins in their last 13 matches. The 21 wins is the most for a WCU team since 1986. The Western Carolinian Page 8 Thursday.
