  • Volume 56 Number 6 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 8 Thursday, September 20, 1990 A&T's Maynor "improvises" 40-19 defeat of Western WCU sets record for penalty yardage, N.C. A&T's Connell Maynor takes advantage of the defensive youth to go 3-0 Tony Bolick Sports Editor For the second time in as many road trips, the Catamounts were victims of a sound defeat. Last week it was at the hand of the North Carolina A&T Aggies. The Aggies took advantage of many Catamount penalties and defensive mistakes to raise their record to 3 - 0 with the 40- 19 win over Western. Much as they did on the East Tennessee State trip last year, the Catamounts fell behind early and things only seemed to get worse. Head Coach Steve Hodgin said he took full responsibility for the loss and felt like the team did not prepare well enough. "They didn't do anything that we didn't expect and Maynor was awful tough to handle. Offensively, we just made too many mistakes. Apparently we weren't ready to handle a team as talented as A&T but basically our problems are with ourselves." Maynor accounted for 323 of the 580 yards in total offense for the Aggies, rushing for three touchdowns and passing for another. He completed 13 of his 16 passes for 196 yards. Western Carolina amassed 294 yards in total offense led by Harris' 185 yards in passing and 36 yards in rushing and Kevin Thigpen who rushed for 61 yards. The downfall for the Cats was the record 120 yards on 13 penalties. Several were for personal fouls. N. C. A&T scored on its very first possession and never trailed afterwards. Assisted by two penalties, the Aggies drove 74 yards in 10 plays to the Western 3 yard line but a fourth down made A&T coach Billy Hayes elect for the 22 yard field goal. The score was 3-0. Western's next possession proved costly as the Cats drove deep into A&T territory only to come out with nothing. On fourth and inches from the A&T 15 yard line, Hodgin nixed the field goal unit and opted to go for it only to see Hemphill stopped short of the first down. "I felt that was a key in the game for us. I felt we could make it but it just wasn't a good effort for everyone concerned on that play," said Steve Hodgin. Connell Maynor then took it upon himself to make the Cats pay. With his team trapped deep in their own territory on third down, Maynor dropped back to pass. The pocket collapsed and he soon found himself scrambling for yardage. He then showed what a good improvisor he was. Thanks in part to some poor tackling, Maynor scrambled from nearly being sacked on his own 10 yard line to run for a touchdown. Officially, the run totaled 79 yards but Connell used the whole width of the field in dodging the Catamount defense. The score took 59 seconds and three plays and A&T led 10-0. After entering the second quarter, the Cats finally scored in the fashion Maynor made popular earlier. Harris completed a pass across the middle to Jon Reed for 38 yards to the A&T 11 yard line. Then, Kevin Thigpen took the handoff in for the touchdown on the next play. With 13:06 left until halftime the Cats closed to within 10-7. Connell Maynor was not to be outdone. In a game thought by many to be a quarterback duel, Maynor outgunned his opponent and again led the Aggies to a score in less than a minute. In six plays, he drove his offense 59 yards and took 54 seconds. The score came on a seven yard run by Maynor on a second and goal. Although the Cats turned the ball over for the first time all year, A&T could not convert. The Aggies were not done yet. Maynor directed a no-huddle offense on two consecu tive drives that rolled the young Catamount defense backwards and produced two more touchdowns in less than four and a half minutes. Led by Maynor's passing and improvising runs, he scored on a 16 yard dash on the tenth play of the drive with 1:56 to play till halftime that made the score 24-7. After a WCU punt, A&T took possession and in six plays totaling 23 seconds, scored again with just 31 seconds until halftime. The conversion failed and Western entered the locker room down 30-7. The third quarter started just like the first half finished. The Aggies drove to deep WCU territory but on fourth and three on the Western 14, Maynor was stopped short and the Cats took over. The next play, Harris threw his first career interception setting A&T in great field position. Again, the defense rose to hold back the Aggies and a 32 yard field goal sailed wide. The Cats took over at their own 20 yard line and drove 80 yards to score. Harris showed no ill effects of the interception and completed passes of 10,20, 15, and the touchdown pass of 11 yards to Jon Reed that capped the drive. Trailing 30- 13, the Cats attempted to go for two but were unsuccessful. The fourth quarter saw A&T add another touchdown on a 55 yard run. Western back-up quarterback Lonnie Galloway got some playing time and answered the touchdown with a 29 yard touchdown pass to Tony Flanagan. A&T drove 23 yards after recovering an onsides kick and added a 42 yard field goal to set the final score: N. C. A&T- 40 Western Carolina- 19. Western Carolina returns home for the next three weeks. The Cats fall to 1 -2 overall and will put their unbeaten conference record on the line against a struggling East Tennessee State squad on Saturday. Eleven to be inducted into new WCU Athletics Hall of Fame Chris A. Smith Staff Writer The first Western Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held this weekend in conjunction with the WCU - East Tennessee State football game. Eleven former WCU athletes have been selected for induction. A total of twelve nominees were unanimously selected for induction. However, Bob Waters will not be inducted in this year's ceremony at the request of his wife Sheri Waters. The eleven inductees will be Art Bird, Western's first football All-American selection in 1949 and the first player to have his jersey (#54) retired; Patrick Cheung, an all-star soccer performer in the early 1970s and holder of the school record for career (63) and season goals (23); Jerry Gaines, the Cats' only three-sport All-American selection, football 1974, track & field 1971 -72, and baseball 1975; Judy Green, a three-sport standout in the early 1980s and holder of a WCU women's record 12 varsity letters; the late Jim Gudger, a three-sport all- conference selection and Western's winningest head basketball coach with 332 wins and three conference championships in his 19 seasons in Cullowhee; Henry Logan, a four- time basketball All-American selection and Western's all-time leading scorer with 3,290 points and a phenomenal 30.7 points per game average; Dan Robinson, an all-star football player and the Catamount head coach for 13 years (1956-1968); Ronald Rogers, the first basketball All-American for the Cats and the first basketball player to have his jersey number retired (#15); Betty Westemoreland Suhre, Western's first women's basketball coach, who posted 14 consecutive winning records and finished with an outstanding 190-89 record; Wayne Tolleson, a two-sport all-conference selection in football and baseball who became WCU's first Southern Conference Player of the Year in 1977-78; and the late Tom Young who put Western on the football map for the first time in the late 1940s as head football coach. He led Western to three winning seasons in his first four years including a North State Conference championship. A total of 107 former Western Carolina athletes were nominated by the public for consideration by the hall of fame committee. A nominee must have received at least seven votes from the nine member committee to be elected to the hall of fame. Bobby N. Setzer, director of athletics and a driving force behind the project, said, "The time was right" for the creation of an athletic hall of fame. "Our university has just completed the official celebration of its 100th birthday and it is appropriate that we begin to celebrate the rich contributions so many people have made to Western Carolina University through athletics," he stated. Setzer recognized the work of the hall of fame committee and cited the leadership of Bob Terrell, the committee chairman. "Bob Terrell provided great guidance to the committee as it laid the groundwork for our hall of fame for years to come through the development of a constitution," he noted. The hall of fame will be located on the north concourse of the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activities Center. "It is going to be a highly visible exhibit and very accessible to the public. I think everyone associated with Western Carolina University will be proud of it," said Setzer. The initial hall of fame induction dinner will be held tomorrow night. The inductees will be honored on the playing field at halftime of the Western Carolina- East Tennessee State football game that afternoon.
