  • Volume 56 Number 6 People The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday, September 20, 1990 Cavan leads cheerleaders, hopes to lead kids Cassandra Barnett Staff Writer Tammie Cavan, a senior here at Western, is preparing for a promising future in two distinct but complementary areas. She is a child development/ family relations major and will complete the required courses in December, when she will begin a six month internship in the field. In addition, Cavan was a varsity cheerleader for four years and is now the cheerleading coach, which plays an important role in her life now, and in her career plans. In high school, Cavan was on the swimming, diving, and gymnastics teams, but did not begin cheerleading until she came to West- em Carolina. She wanted to continue her involvement with diving and gymnastics in college, but these programs are not offered at Western. A former cheerleader suggested that she try out for cheerleading, explaining that gymnastics are a big part of it, and that with her background and skill, she would not find the transition difficult. With this information, Cavan decided to give it a shot. She laughed as she recalled her abrupt introduction to cheering, "I started going to the practices the week before try-outs; then I tried out and I made it. I've been cheering ever since!' The late beginner has ac complished a lot since then, having been named Cheerleader of the Year two consecutive years by the Big Cat Club. The cheerleaders work with the Big Cat Club in support of WCU athletics, and members chose Cavan for her spirit and hard work with the club. After two years of cheering for Western, she was one of one hundred cheerleaders chosen from eight hundred hopefuls to make the Universal Cheerleading Association national team. With this organization, Cavan spent four months travelling around the country giving clinics to high school cheerleading squads. She has also had several years of experience coaching gymnastics at a local gymnasium for children, and at a dance studio. When the previous cheerleading coach moved, Cavan was one of four to apply for the open position. To be certified as a college cheerleading coach, three months of coaching at the high school level are required. She met this prerequisite during her time with the Universal Cheerleading Association. The athletic director conducted interviews and deemed Cavan the best person for the job. In the past, there was only one advisor/coach position, which recently split into two separate offices. Cavan does not agree with appointing advisors who have had no experience as cheerleaders. "Since I've actually been a cheer- Carotinian photo by Jonathan Fondow Tammie Cavan leader and a cheerleading instructor, I think it's really been an asset to our squad." As the coach, Cavan holds all of the cheerleaders' practices, organizes events, and prepares a game plan each week. This requires time and imagination because she puts a lot of emphasis on variety. Another very important aspect of cheerleading, according to Cavan, is unity. She believes that the squad should work together and progress together, even if that means holding back while one or two members learn the stunts. Cavan said weight- lifting is very instrumental as a method of encouraging unity. The squad lifts weights two or three times a week, and according to the coach, it helps them to relieve frustrations and grow closer together by giving them the opportunity to watch one another grow stronger. She said it is personally motivating. Cavan sees coaching as a big responsibility with great rewards. She enjoys helping the cheerleaders expand their abilities and develop together. It has also taught her to manage her time wisely and to consider how her actions reflect upon Western. "It teaches you responsibility. You always have to act your best because you know that anything that you do as a cheerleader, you're representing your school." Presently, Cavan is helping the cheerleading squad prepare for a national competition in December. The competition involves working for six months on a routine that lasts only three minutes. "You have to show everything you've got in three minutes," Cavan said. She has a lot of confidence in the squad, commenting, "We really think that we're within the top five." Cavan will graduate in May after her internship with the Smoky Mountain Mental Health Center, where she will coordinate activities for the elderly. She said about the future, "I hope to get my master's degree and go into some kind of counseling." Specifically, she wants to become a high school counselor and cheerleading coach. mum BE A RED CROSS VOLUNTEER HI American Red Cross jriL i^'ih*'*i y«»»>coct»»»»»o»»>ijoc.> RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS THE MOST EXCITING FEW HOURS YOU'LL SPEND ALL WEEK.
