  • Sports The Western Carolinian Page 11 Thursday, September 28. 1989 Strahm's Fears Come True; Cats "Taken to the Woodshed" by ETSU by Bill Graham As most of the 5,268 fans at East Tennessee State University's mini-dome figured it Saturday night, there were at least two good reasons the Buccaneers and Western Carolina should have played outdoors. It was great football weatheroutside - acrisp early fall night at another mountain campus - but moreover, Memorial Center wasn't equipped with nearly enough ventilation to usher out the stench rising from the playing field. Rotten football smells worse than your average road kill. And while East Tennessee State was much less than impressive, Western was miserable. ETSU's students have a carefully cultivated tradition of leaving home games at halftime to get a head start drinking, usually because their Bucs are on the ropes. Saturday, they left because East Tennessee had already been given the game. One irritated Cat fan said Western's play, characterized in a general way by missed assignments, fumbles, bad passes, special teams miscues and shaky defense, was the ultimate situation comedy. Head Catamount coach Dale Strahm obviously agreed, and got in an l-told-you-so to boot. "Getting beat by East Tennessee State is one thing, but getting taken to the woodshed is another," he said. "I never dreamed this could happen to this team. I warned against this type of thing happening after that win over UTC." Western's fans - and apparently the players - didn't think it could happen either. The Cats had beaten the Bucs every year since 1981, and were coming off a tenacious, if not dominant, performance against Chattanooga. But the Catamounts came out flat, didn't concentrate, and fell by 19 to a team they should have beaten. And teams Western should beat are becoming a scarce commodity. The last six games of the season are against teams that are either ranked in the NCAA Division 1-AA top twenty or compete on the division one level. Luckily, seven games remain. This weekend, Mars Hill's Lions come to town. Western has outscored the Lions in the teams' last six meetings by a margin of 265-15. The series is Western's oldest rivalry. The teams first met in 1931, but have only squared off 12 times. Interestingly, of those 12 games, ten have been shutouts. The last meeting was in 1987, when the Cats prevailed 41-0. To record another shutout, Western's defense will have to thwart sophomore Lion quarterback Jeff Bailey, who has Southern Conference Predictions by Perryn Oglesby and the sports staff Perryn Oglesby Western Carolina vs. Mars Hill Last-minute heroics finally came to an end for the Catamounts last week against ETSU. The Cats had trouble getting on track and found themselves in a hole that they could not get out of. The Buccaneers of ETSU finally broke Western's streak against them and beat the Cats for the first time in eight years. Western comes back to the friendly surroundings of E.J. Whitmire Stadium to face Mars Hill this week. The Catamounts will rebound and do so in a big way. Western by 21. (28- 7) Applachian State vs. ETSU ETSU will be at home against the Mountaineers of App State. Appalachian is coming off of a big win over James Madison last week, while ETSU got their first Southern Conference win against Western. The Buccaneers should be ready for App State, but they will have problems against a bigger Mountaineer team. Appalachian should overpower ETSU in the second half. App State by 11. (28-17) SC State at Citadel Going into the fourth week of the 1989 season, The Citadel is the only Southern Conference team that is still unbeaten. The Cadets of The Citadel are riding high and will be at home against SC State. SC State has always been tough and that should not change this week, but the Ca dets are coming off of a big win against Navy last week. This big win should have The Citadel fired up and ready. The Citadel by 14. (24-10) Furman at VMI Furman was idle last week and should be well-rested as they head up to Virginia to face VMI. The defending NCAA Division l-AA National Champions are 2-1 overall and have not played a conference game yet. VMIwillbeFurman's first Southern Conference opponent and the Paladins will be looking to start the schedule off right. VMI is 0-1 in the Conference and 0-4 overall. VMI has played hard and only lost by 5 last week against Richmond, but they must play even harder this week. Furman by 21. (24-3) UT Chattanooga at Middle Tenn St. Chattanooga lost a heartbreaker two weeks ago against Western Carolina, but rebounded to beat a high-powered Marshall team last week. UTC will be looking for their second win of the season as they go to Middle Tennesses State. Tennessee State played Georgia Southern on ESPN last week in the middle of a downpour. The Eagles of Southern were all over them, and won 26-0. Chattanooga will be attempting to do the same this week, and defense will be thf key. UTC shut out Marshall 14 0 and will win again this week Chattanooga by 4. (14-10) Fred Mason ".<* Shawn Busby Tony Bolick WCU to Host Cross-Country Invitational completed 23 passes in 54 attempts for 227 yards and two scores. Receiver Boggis Hill, who has caught 10 passes for 162 yards, and running back Chuck Walker, who has rushed 56timesfor 320 yards, have also been keys for Mars Hill, which, like Western, has won two of four. The hesitant Catamount offense is dependent on senior signal-caller Todd Cottrell, who has completed 40 of 78 for 499 yards and three touchdowns, and receivers Jon Reed and Andy Schultz. Reed, a junior, has caught a pass in every game as a Catamount - 25 as of Saturday, and he's flagged down 10 for 169 yards and two touchdowns this year. Schultz has ten catches for 127 yards and a single score. Hard-working junior tailback Carlton Terry has hammered out 329 yards rushing on 101 carries for four touchdowns. The Catamount defense is led by linebackers Larry In- man, Kell Helms, and Brett Baker, and by tackles Derrick Harrison and Steve Foster. Helms struck some hard licks before irritating an old knee injury Saturday, but returned late in the game and will play this weekend. Returning to bolster the linebacking corps will be Wayne Parker, who was out at the beginning of the season when he suffered a toxic reaction to asthma medication. Mars Hill's defense has been stingy this year, but will be outsized by the Catamount offensive line, which didn't meet Strahm's expectations Saturday and will probably be eager to do so by the weekend. The Catamounts will carry a five-game Mountain Heritage Day wining streak into the Mars Hill contest. Western is six and two in home games held on Heritage day.
