  • The Western Carolinian Page 13 Thursday, April 20,1989 Cats Pick-up the Pace and Dust Off Carson-Newman FRANK LAMM Carolinian Staff Writer WCU recovered from a slow start thanks to the pitching of Mike Thomas and five Carson- Newman errors, putting them on track to a 10-5 win. The Eagles used their power to take an early 4-0 lead. In the first inning, secondbaseman Wesley Nokes led off with a single. Two outs later, Ryan Henry drove a 1-2 pitch over the fence. In the third, Nokes again singled. Kevin Roach then followed with a long homer—All four runs were charged to starter Jack Kimel. Following Roach's home run, Thomas, 1-1, replaced Kimel. Over the final 6 1/3 innings, Thomas surrendered just three singles, while striking out three. WCU's bats were also slow getting started. Over the first three innings, the Cat's stranded five baserunners, and a total of twelve in the course of the game. In the top of the fourth, the Mike Thomas Cat's finally broke through against Eagles pitcher, Bob Adams. Richie Senn, who led off the inning with a triple, scored on Kelly Giles' double play. The Catamounts added four funs in the fourth thanks to singles by Clint Fairey, Mark Poarch, and Senn. Matt Raleigh added a double, and Grant Brittain's sacrifice fly gave the Cats a 5-4 lead. With Thomas cruising through the Eagle lineup, Western looked to add some insurance runs. They did so in the seventh. Raleigh led off the inning with a walk, Poarch then followed with a homer, his 11th of the season. In the eighth, Fairey doubled with one out off Steve Crawford, then Raleigh drew a walk. After Poarch struck out, Fairey came home on Crawford's wild pitch. Raleigh then scored when Eagle thirdbaseman, Roach bobbled Senn's groundball. This game marked the first time in the last 14 contests that Western scored in double figures. It also marked the last road game of the regular season. Western will play the Eagles in the season finale on April 25 at Ronnie G. Childress Field. Women's Tennis Peaking; Men's Team Struggling Western Carolina University's men's and women's tennis teams resembled two trains on different tracks over the past week, as the Lady Cats won two of three matches while the Catamounts lost all three of their contests. The WCU women's squad will try to continue their hot streak this weekend as they conclude their season at the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Tournament in Asheville, NC. Meanwhile, the men's team will have two more chances to get in the win column before their tournament date in two weeks. Western Carolina's women's tennis team closed out regular season play with a flurry, losing at Furman 0-9 last Wednesday before rebounding with road wins over Appalachian State 9-0 on Thursday and Lees-McRae 6-2 on Friday. Leading the way for the Lady Cats were #3 Kristin Fogleman. #4 Kathleen Murphy, #5 Kim Whitting and #6 Tracy Swaim, all of whom posted singles wins over both ASU and Lees- McRae. The doubles pairs of Fogleman-Murphy and Swaim- Sheri Almond also claimed two victories for the week. Going into tournament play, Swaim owns the team's best singles record at 8-6, followed by Murphy (8-7), Whiting (9-8) and #2 Valerie Bako (8-8). Swaim and Almond lead the doubles standings at 9-8. The Lady Cats close out their regular season team play with an 8-9 overall record, Their 2-3 league record places them fourth in the Southern Conference, with this the tournament play scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Asheville Racquet Club. The men's team failed to win in three close matches over the past week. The tennis Catamounts suffered losses at Appalachian State 4-5 on Thursday and Lees-McRae 2-7 on Friday, before returning home to fall victim to Wofford 2-7 this past Monday. #1 Kais Arfaoui, #3 Carroll Purcell and #5 Dave Corbett, each won two of their three singles matches during the week. The doubles pair of Corbett-Greg Lovelace also posted two wins. PurcelPs 11-5 singles record leads the team, followed closely by Arfaoui at 10-6. In doubles, Purcell- Richard Tapp are 7-7, while Corbett- Lovelace own a 4-2 record. The tennis Cats owned a 7-10 overall team record going into Tuesday's match at Furman, and their 1-3 league mark places them in sixth place in the conference standings. The Southern Conference Men's Tennis Tournament is set for April 28-30 at the Asheville Racquet Club.
