  • The Western Carolinian Page 13 Thursday, April 6, 1989 Air Band Returns by Amy Goretsky WCU Percussion Ensemble to Perform Tonight The ever popular Air Band contest has once again returned to our campus after skipping a year due to lack of facilities in which to hold it. The competition this year is proving to be quite fierce as many campus organizations are already gunning up for the big night. Air Band, WCU's version of the popular TV show "Putting on the Hits," is sponsored by AERho the honorary broadcasting society on campus. It has long been an outstanding tradition here at Western and was greatly missed last Spring. Now that Hoey Auditorium has reopened with its state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, Air Band '89 is sure to be the best ever. Advanced ticket sales begin Monday, April 10th during lunch and supper in both cafeterias. Tickets arc $2.00 and can be purchased on the night of the contest, April 18th, at the door. Air Bands will begin competing promptly at 8:00 pm so be sure to get there early so you can see all the excitement! Anyone wishing to enter the Air Band '89 contest or wanting more details about Air Band, please call Drew Parham at 227-6343 anytime between 10:00 pm and 12:00 midnight. The concert is open to the public and there is no 'Out of the Darkness' Brings Space Age Laser Show Most people have seen laser shows in one form or an- other-as background for rock concerts, as part of television and cinema productions, at EPCOT. But of the show to be presented next Wednesday evening, April 12, in Reid Gym, Chameleon Productions partner Dan Mark- ham says, "It'll be something like you've never seen before." "Out of the Darkness" is a three-dimensional visual rock show including 35mm slides, film, computer/electronic graphics and the most sophisticated ion laser system available today. The music of Yes, Bon Jovi, U2, INXS, Molly Hatchet, Talking Heads and other top groups will be accompanied by an array of laser and animated effects. After years of working separately in theatrical projects, event management and laser visual effects, brothers John and Dan Markham formed Chameleon Productions in an effort to upgrade the laser as an entertainment tool. The laser shows of just a few years ago could cost in the neighborhood of $12,000 and were fraught with problems. After almost two years of research and development, the Chameleon laser system provides a better show at a fraction of the cost. Innovations such as fiber optic paths, high-speed computer-driven reflectors and open- air hanging scrims have added a sophistication and image quality previously unavailable. Wednesday's show has been described as an emotional sine wave, the music and the imagery changing and changing again. charge for admission. Mario Gaetano directs the seven-musician ensemble which comprises Anthony Higdon, Richard Frettoloso, Joe Reed, Shannon Kerr, Steven Ruff, Tommy Keggan and Matt Henley. Works scheduled for the concert include the premiere performance of Gaetano's "Quintet for Percussion," Robert Washburn's "Pentagons for Percussion," James Drew's "Metal Concert" Claude Debussy's "Golliwog's Cakewalk," George Green's "Stop Time" and "Log Cabin Blues." Xylophone soloist will be Richard Hilgdon for "Stop Time" and Richard Frettoloso for "Log Cabin Blues.
