  • People The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday, February 2,1989 Holly Wheatley PEOPLE/ ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Nominees for Irene Ryan Awards Announced by Bill Mclntire STAFF WRITER Dr. Steve Ayers of the WCU Speech and Theatre Arts department has announced that four of his students have been nominated for the prestigious Irene Ryan Award. This award was founded by Irene Ryan who played Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies. A little known fact is that she died on-stage during a rehearsal of Pippin, a Broadway play. Ayers says "She was a real trooper, dedicated to the idea that the show must go on!" Nominees are: Carol Cloud for her role as Mistress Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Heather Pittillo for her role as Curley's wife in Of Mice And Men, Sean Parker for his role as Frank Ford in The Merry Wives Of Windsor, and Wayne Wilson for his role as Falstaff in The Merry Wives Of Windsor. This is Ms. Cloud's second competition; last year she was nominated for her role as Sissy in Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, by Ed Grazy K. She is the senior scholarship holder of the Speech and Theatre Arts Department, having held her scholarship for four years. She has been on stage since age five. Fellow actors call her role as Mistress Ford "Warm, mischievous, vengeful, sexy and beautiful. She glides across the stage with great poise and dignity." Ms. Pittillo's talented Students May Help Fund Election Simply by placing a check mark in the appropriate block on your federal income tax form, you may participate in financing the 1992 Presidential Election Campaign, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The fund was established by Congress to support public financing of Presidential election campaigns. If you wish to designate $1 of your tax money to the fund, you should mark the "yes" block on the form. Designating $1 of tax money to the fund does not increase your tax bill or decrease your refund, the IRS noted. REDUCED TO $133,000.00. Current appraisal of $184,250.00 ERA PARKWAY REALTY 500 BALSAM ROAD* MAIL: P.O.BOX 1399 WAYNESVILLE, NC 28786 704-452-9191 portrayal of Curley's wife brings delicacy, naivete and feminine mystique into an otherwise male maelstrom. "She is controlled and very believable; she creates the tragedy that befalls her!" Sean Parker has done an off- Broadway play called Manifest Destiny. He is currently playing a Ranch Hand in Of Mice And Men and Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar. His fellow actors say that in his role as Frank Ford "He showed great finesse and had a nice use of the English language, being especially adept at Shakespearean English." Wayne Wilson has declined to participate in this competition due to his busy schedule. He is concentrating on his roles as Carlson in Of Mice And Men and as Caiphas in Jesus Christ Superstar. But, there is speculation that he will be chosen again next year for the role he will play in Tobacco Road. W-2 Forms Due By January 31 Employers must make available to each of their employees from 1988 a Form W-2, "Wage and Tax Statement," by January 31, 1989. Employees who have not received their Form W-2 by that date should contact their employer and request the form, the Internal Revenue Service says. Employees who, after having contacted their employer, still have not received a W-2 by February 15 should notify the IRS. When contacting the IRS, employees will be asked to provide the employer's name, address and employer identification number, if known. Having the necessary information available on the first contact, IRS adds, will prevent the need to call again. WCU's Friends Helping Friends by Emily Oakes STAFF WRITER An excellent way for students of Western Carolina University to grow personally is through the FRIENDS program. FRIENDS is an on campus program sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation Management. The main objective of FRIENDS is to provide a one-on-one relationship between troubled youths and supportive student volunteers. Another objective is to increase the youth's personal strengths, which in turn allows the youth to function constructively in society. Involved students commit at least 16 hours per month to their friend. WCU's FRIENDS is part of a much larger volunteer organization, the "Governor's One-On- One Program." There are a total of 33 programs in the state such as FRIENDS. FRIENDS works in conjunction with the 30th Judicial Court District in Jackson, Macon, Haywood, Swain, Clay and Cherokee Counties, and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. The WCU program is unique in that it is the only volunteer program of this type based at a university. FRIENDS began in 1984 when Russell Bachert, then the director of the Parks and Recreation Management Depart ment, wrote the proposal for this program. The youth in the program, ages 10-16, suffer from low self- esteem and may have shown signs of this by running away from home or truancy. Ninety percent of the youth are referred to the program through juvenile court personnel and law enforcement officials. Youths who have committed more serious offenses are not admitted into FRIENDS. At this time, there are 21 WCU students involved in FRIENDS. This unique group is comprised of caring, dependable individuals. They are comfortable in being a role model, a very important part of their responsibilities. The role of the student is not to be a bank, chauffeur, or babysitter, but simply to be a concerned, energetic, listening friend. In addition, the students have committed themselves to at least two semesters in the program. One of the many advantages of being in the FRIENDS program is that students gain three hours of credit for each semester they are involved.. In order to become a part of the FRIENDS program, a student must first register for PRM 493, Topics: FRIENDS Program. There is also an application process, references to be submitted, and a careful screening of applicants. This program offers a valuable learning experience for students. An intense training period is designed to better prepare students for problems that might arise concerning the youths. Director of the FRIENDS program, Ann Jacobs, has been in this position since August, 1988. When asked what interested her in FREINDS, she responded, "I just care so much for kids." Because this is her first experience in directing a volunteer program, Mrs. Jacobs has found it a great learning experience. She finds her job quite challenging because she is responsible for everyone's needs, both the students' and the youths'. Throughout this semester, there will be articles in the WESTERN CAROLINIAN featuring the involved in FRIENDS. They will share their interests and experiences in the program. For more information on the FRIENDS program contact Ann Jacobs, Director at 227- 7435. Students Eligible to Spend Fall Semester In China Employees should receive a W-2 from each employer for whom they worked, even if they only worked for a particular employer for part of the year. Employees should also be aware that if they leave their jobs, they may request that their employers give them their Forms W-2 within 30 days after they leave. Receiving a Form W-2 for each job held during 1988 is important, not only because a copy of it must accompany the tax return, but also for personal records, the IRS said. Form W-2 lists many items including the wages paid, the amount of federal income tax withheld, social security tax withheld, any uncollected employee social security tax on tips, social security wages, social security tips, advance earned income credit payments, and the cost of group-term life insurance over $50,000. Training Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. The program carries 16 hours of academic credit. It consists of classroom study of Chinese language and culture, and includes a variety of opportunities to visit historic sites in Beijing, attend cultural events and travel more widely in China. The cost of the program—including room, board, tuition and round-trip airfare from New York— is approximately $5,568. To qualify for the semester-in-China program, a student must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above, a demonstrated ability in the learning of foreign language and a sincere interest in the study of Chinese culture. The program is open to graduate and undergraduate students. The application deadline is Feb, 1, and a $600 deposit is due by June 14. All money is refundable through June 14.
