There are many children here in Jackson County who are not very fortunate and who would appreciate a little Christmas cheer. Realizing this, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity of WCU have chosen to donate a lot of time and expense to three special children during the Christmas holidays. The children were chosen with the help of the Jackson County Social Services Department. The Deltas and the Omegas plan to give a big Christmas party for the children with lots of toys and gifts. This special event will take place on Saturday, December 3, at 4 p.m. There is a rumor that Santa himself might be there!! This is one of the biggest service projects of the year for Delta Sigma Theta and for Omega Psi Phi! Both organizations have built a strong foundation on service to the community. Nationally, Delta Sigma Theta has just celebrated 75 years of excellence, and Omega Psi Phi is proud of its 77 years of vibrant history. On campus, both organizations are well involved with other activities. The Deltas have sisters who are a part of the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, Chancellor's Ambassador's, WCU Honors Program, Catamount Kittens, and The Order of Omega (a Greek Honor Society). The Omega's have brothers who are members of the WCU Football team, WCU ROTC, WCU Track team, and Epsilon Nu Eta ( Environmental Health Honor Society). Both organizations believe in service as well as scholarship. If you or your group would like to help the Deltas and the Omegas in sponsoring the three children, please contact the president of Delta Sigma Theta, Sheila Davidson, at 227-4108 or the president of Omega Psi Phi , David Goodwin , at 293-9893. These children will appreciate whatever you have to give!! Working for peace, through social and environmental justice here at WCU, is the Peace and Justice Society. Robin Jordan and Anne Haplin, spokespersons for the society, describe the purpose of the organization , "to help educate student about aspects of controversial issues." Local, national, and global issues the society is focusing on include: The nuclear-arms race, world hunger, apartheid, and the homeless problem in America. Even though the organization was formed this semester, and is still seeking SGA approval, it's members have already become active. "Right now we're focusing on future issues," says Robin Jordan. "The reason for this education period, is to better understand the issues we need to confront," explained Robin. The strongest educational tool they've found is the use of different speakers and videos, in a discussion forum atmosphere. The group feels that this education is essential in readying themselves for their future goals of writing congressmen and becoming ac- Concert Band and Choral Groups will Present the Annual Christmas Concert tive in the political process. Furthermore, even thocgh formed this semester, the Peace and Justice Society has already begun to get involved. They participated in the CROP Walk, a walk to raise money for domestic and world hunger. Also, they have hosted several guest speakers including a native South African who discussed apartheid, and a former Peace Corps director. Even so, the group intends to encourage public forums focusing on current issues. The Society plans to have Bill Mchle present a slideshow on his experiences in Nicaragua, and they also plan on working once a month at the Hospitality House of Ashevilie, a center for the homeless. The Peace and Justice Society is intent on facing many issues that are plaguing the futures of many college students, such as the nuclear arms race, environmental issues, and the problems of the hungry and homeless. The society offers education, which is an important clement of any political action. For more information contact Robin or Anne at 227-6156. Anyone visiting here for the first time is sure to notice right off how well kept and cared for the grounds are. However, this does not come without a lot of hard work on the part of the grounds crew. Herb Vogel, superintendent of WCU's Physical Plant, states lhat although he finds his job "challenging," he enjoys the work very much. ritics, corporate executives and other high-tipping people. He also worked at WRGC in Sylva as an announcer. Steve has definitely had an exciting life. In eighth grade, he became a missionary for 2 weeks in Haiti. In the summer of 1986, the Bishop of Western North Carolina Conference appointed Steve to attend the World Methodist Conference in Nairobi. In this trip he visited Kenya, Greece, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and sat next to Desmond Tutu of South Africa at dinner. The name 'Roundman' is a nickname given to Steve when he was in grade school. It is hard to believe, but Steve swears he used to be short and fat. But now, Steve is the slick operator that brings you the only "scratch and sniff radio show. 'Roundman' Steve lives by one rule, "I believe in living life in mediocrity; don't do anything too much or too little." That's our Steve! You can catch 'Round- man' Steve Fisher from 1 to 3 in the afternoon, Monday thru Friday at 90.5 on your FM dial. Mr. Vogel graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in horticulture. He then went on to owning and operating his own nursing and greenhouse, before coming to Western seven years ago. He has been Physical Plant Superintendent for four years. Mr. Vogel states that students can help make his job easier by not littering and not walking through the shrubbery beds.
