  • The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday, December 1, 1988 Christmas is for Everyone: TTQ]ps ffw 51 (Q<D<Ddl C5iir®©ir Reaching Out to the Homeless 0 by Jonathan Allen by Robin Jordan STAFF WRITER How fortunate we are as college students to have adequate food and shelter and to be able to celebrate the holidays comfortably. Following tradition, many of us will be giving and receiving gifts this year. At times it has appeared that the original religious intentions of celebration through peace and good will have been replaced with materialistic thoughts of what gifts to give and what we wish to receive. Once again in America, commercialism wins out. This holiday season may we appreciate our most privileged lives and remember those that are less fortunate. World hunger and homelcssness do not directly touch most of our lives, yet their presence on this planet degrades all of humanity. It is estimated by Church World Services that 40,000 children die every day from hunger-related diseases. Millions more will be undernourished, blinded, and otherwise disabled by malnutrition and infection. Each year 13 to 18 million people die from starvation in the world. In underdeveloped countries over-population is a major problem. Environmental problems, including soil erosion and drought, often prevent Third World communities form having the natural resources necessary to grow adequate amounts of food. Political instability and corruptible leaders with misdirected priorities often prohibit the fulfillment of possible solutions. Elimination world hunger is not an easy task. As individuals we can participate in events such as the CropWalk which raises money for programs that combat domestic and international hunger. We can alter our own lives by conserving energy, recycling trash, and not wasting food. Eradicating world hunger can begin in our own country. A national estimate states that America has between 1 and 3 million homeless people. Many of these people often face long periods of hunger, pain, and harsh weather conditions. This holiday season many homeless individuals and families will be crowding into temporary shelters, freezing in automobiles, huddling in doorway, and living in back alleys. There are many myths as well as truths concerning the homeless. The increase in the number of homeless families can be attributed to the imbalance in the ratio of low-income housing to low-income employment. It is simply not true that all homeless people are lazy and unwilling to work. Many of these adults have only the skills and opportunities for low-income employment. Their backgrounds are often ones of poverty which have hindered their chances of receiving higher education. Alcoholism and mental illness often prohibit many homeless individuals from being able to provide for themselves a normal standard of living. Rehabilitative institutions are either too expensive or too overcrowded to provide services for these people. There are several things that we as American citizens can do to reduce the amount of homeless people. We can support and volunteer for local programs which work for the immediate needs of the homeless. The Hospitality House in Ashevilie is one such program. As constituents we can advocate that our local and federal governments investigate and support possible solutions to eradicate homelessness. Institutional flaws that prohibit access to housing and rehabilitation services should be examined realistically. The holiday season brings joy, hope, and good times for most families here in America. However, for the millions of people who are starving and living on the streets it is a time of pain, sadness, and despair. A gift that we can give to ourselves and to the world is the awareness of these social ills, the self-empowerment to work to overcome them, and the realization that we as individuals, together can make a difference in the world. To obtain a good career, most employers look for people who are trustworthy, had good grades in high school and college, and have good previous references from employers and friends. Being trustworthy is an important factor in getting a job. When meetings are arranged or community activities are planned, the person needs to be there on time. Responsibility is a large part of being trustworthy. Showing the ability to take control of a situation, no matter how large, and to take the praise or the criticism is a sign of responsibility. When something is done when it is supposed to be, it shows that that person is honest in one way. Being on time, responsible and honest are three important parts of being trustworthy. Having good grades in high school and in college are a requirement to having a good job later in life. To be able to obtain them, three important and simple steps need to be followed. Choose courses that may be enjoyed. When courses are enjoyed, the grades will tend to be higher. Working in a suitable environment will also increase the potential of having good grades. Studying is a major step in receiving good grades. When all three steps arc combined, the potential is there for obtaining good grades. Receiving good personal and job related references will help to satisfy the interviewing employer's requirements. When the interviewer contacts past employees of the applicant, and he gets good responses about the applicant, it will help in showing if he was a good and dependable worker. When personal references are contacted, they are mainly for the purpose of finding out the character of the person. So long the applicant has left satisfied employers and good friends behind, they will be good references for him. If the applicant is trustworthy, has good grades and good references, then he has the possibility of getting a good job.
