The American Fur Institute admits that 87% of all wild furs are trapped by the use of the leghold trap. Federal legislation against trapping is introduced annually, but due to the powerful fur industry lobby, legislation to ban the leg-hold trap has yet to be passed. Rather than contribute millions of dollars to fight campaigns to ban the use of the leghold trap, a more ethical approach for the fur industry would be to set aside a part of their enormous profits for the development of a humane trap. However, an even more compassionate approach to the fur issue promoted at the meeting is simply not to wear fur coats. People are reminded that 'Compassion is the Fashion' these days and 'Real People Wear Fake Furs.' If you would like more information on compassionate consumerism or to view the video documentaries contact the Society for Animal Welfare 586-6389 or Jackson County Humane Society 586-6064. My Brother's Keeper "cruelty- free" catalogs are available to the public at the Jackson County Public Library at no cost. The Staff of the Western Carolinan wishes it's readers a safe and happy holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year. May all your grades be as high as your hopes for the coming year. BLOOM COUNTY Roommate Wanted for Spring Semester. 2Br House within walking distance from WCU. Mature Jr.,Sr., Grad only.
