A Choir With An Inspiration Student Group Gaining Fame For Its Gospel Sound -Edwin Carlton Photo By PAMELA HORNEURE Feature Writer "Is that music I hear?" thought a new student as she passed under a third floor window of the Music-English building one Wednesday night. She found out later that the sounds were coming from the Western Carolina University Inspirational Choir. The WCU Inspirational Choir is a student-run, black gospel group that performs for churches, rest homes and various other organizations upon request. The choir was started In 1974 as the OES (Organization Joan's and Vickie's Family Hair Care at Modem Beauty Shop#1 (next to Family Dollar Store) Stylists: Joan Ashe and Vickie Bradley Formerly of World of Hair We welcome all our customers to our new establisment! Uke "The Dream of the Blue Turtles," this latest release has a Jazz Influence, even moreso. Sting (a.k.a. Gordon Sumner) worked extensively with Jazz musician Gil Evans during his two-year hiatus from The Police and the result Is an almost all Jazz album. The new record Is also uncommonly long(30:39 side one), but Sting Is definitely not common. Side one contains six songs:" Lazarus Heart," "Be Still My Beating Heart," "Englishman In New York," "History Will Teach Us Nothing," "They Dance Alone(Gueca Song)," and "Fragile." "Lazarus Heart," according to Sting, 'was a vivid nightmare...fashioned Into a song." The fourth track on the album,"History Will Teach Us Nothing," presents Sting's views concerning politics and history In general. This song could also be an allusion to "Walking In Your Footsteps" (from "Synchronlclty") which correlates the dinosaur's demise to our own. A result of the 1986 Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour, "They Dance Alone" tells about the families of political prisoners in Chile, South America The Gueca dance Is performed outside the prisons as a symbolic protest In a country without democracy. "We'll Be Together, "Straight To My Heart," "Rock Steady.' "Slster Moon," "Little Winep," and "The Secret Marriage" make up Side Two. Currently receMng air play on WWCU, "We'll Be Together" Is an upbeat love song. Other than the lyrics, the only explanation Sting offers Is the following quote: "| shall meet you outside the railway station, you shall know me by the cut of my clothes and the smell of mycologne." "SIsterMoon" contains the album title which Is a quote from a Shakespearean sonnet. Sting was accosted late one night by a drunk asking "How beautiful Is the moon? How beautiful Is the moon?" Sting replied: "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun." He adds that the song Is for lunatics everywhere. "Little Winep" Is a Jiml Hendrlx original Sting recreated with Gil Evans. Sting dislikes his albums being called "so- ... Continued Page 5 of Ebony Students) Gospel Choir. In 1980, the choir formed a separate student organization and assumed Its presentname.
