  • The Western Carolinian 8 Thursday, September 10, 1987 Lovin To Head School of Arts & Sciences By: Scott Stalmasek It was announced this summer that Dr. Clifford Lovin, professor of history at WCU, was the new Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Lovin will replaced Dr. John McCrone who left WCU in December after serving as dean for eleven years. The search for a new dean began in April when a Search Committee, chaired by Dean Gurney Chambers, sent out announcements of the vacancy. The Search Committee was appointed by John Wakely, the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs and included represenative from other WCU schools. The announcement resulted in 148 applications which were reduced by the Search Committee to five applicants. These five candidates were: Dr. Patricia Cummins of Northern Arizona University, Dr. Peter Karsten of the University of Pittsburg, Dr. Dennis Sentilles of the University of Missouri, and two WCU professors; Dr. James Nicholl, head of the English department, and Dr. Lovin. Each of the candidates were interviewed by the Search Committee, the faculty and staff of the School of Arts and Sciences, Chancellor Coulter and by Vice-Chancellor Wakely who made the final decision of Dr. Dr. Clifford Lovin Lovin. Vice-Chancellor Wakely said that his decision was based on the candidates ability 1o lead the School of Arts and Sciences, their ability to work with all the components of the university, and their scholarly achievements. Dr. Lovin has been a professor of history at WCU for 21 years. His area of special interest is European History of the 20th century. Lovin served WCU as the Assistant Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences from 1969 until 1973. From 1977 until 1981 he was director of the Mountain Heritage Center, and was Coordinator of the Social Science Program from 1981 until 1985. As the new Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Lovin wants to get the faculty more excited about what they are doing . He also wants to emphasize the necessity of a broad based education for students in every major. More and more people are realizing that a major in the arts and sciences is a comeback field." says Lovin. "It can't provide jobs, but it can provide a solid foundation for them. As Dean, Dr. Lovin would like to get faculty members to tie all of the general education courses together in order to "make students learn that what they are learning is a common experience." Dr. Lovin will now be responsible for faculty members within the School of Arts and Sciences, for their tenure, hiring, and firing as well as keeping abreast of the offered cirriculum and areas of study within the school. Commenting on being selected as the new dean, Dr. Lovin said, "I am very pleased personally. But more important, I think this appointment is a tribute to the faculty members." FRAT RUSH A SUCCESS By: Brent Taylor A timeless fraternity tradition was off to a brisk start this fall as 170 men signed up to rush the 14 campus fraternities. According to Dean Doug Davis, advisor to the Interfraternal Council, the number of applicants this year is higher, as are the academic qualifications of those aspiring to pledge. To be eligible to rush, an unaffiliated upper- classman must have a 2.00 cumulative GPA, while incoming freshmen must boast an SAT score of 800 or better. The average SAT score of the freshman rushees is 950. Rush kicked off on August 31 with the General Smoker at the University Center's Grand Room. Each fraternity was represented by six members and a brief description of each organization and their upcoming events was given. It afforded the fraternity brothers and the rushees the opportunity to learn more about each other. The subsequent three nights were devoted to individual fraternity smokers, during which each organization had thirty minutes to go into greater detail about themselves. An average of 40 men rushing the fraternities attended each smoker. This year the fraternities are stressing the importance of academics and leadership. Some fraternities stipulate the maintenance of a minimum QPR. To instill leadership qualities, fraternities will appoint pledges to committees with the responsibilities of accomplishing specific goals. The Sigma Nu, Pi Lambda Phi and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternities are planning pasta dinners as rush functions. Sigma Nu will be traveling to Bust Your Ass Falls, Saturday, Sept 12, while on that same date the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity will be camping. Sunday, Sept 13, Pi Kappa Alpha will be going tubing. Delta Sigma Phi, Fraternity of the Year for 1986- 87, will be showing their new Chapter Room. Rush chairmen urge rushees needing transportation to rush functions to contact them. ■~i WORLD of HAIR Call for appointment or walk-ins welcome.
