  • Western Carolinian May 2, 1985 Announcements Dream Come True Darrel Carson, a young, black, quadraplegic man was presented a complete computer set-up, including deck, monitor, printer, recorder, and a specially designed, adjustable carriage module. The presentation was made possible through a fund initiated by a graduate student, Bob Newlon, at Western Carolina University. A very special "Thank You" is due to the following facilitators of a dream... Mrs. Lolly Robinson, Asheville (the main contributor to the find), Mr. Andy DeGrove, W.C.U. (technical advice and machining), and Mr. Dan Hooper and employees, Sylva (patience, valuable suggestions, time and materials expertise). Additional thanks go to Kappa Alpha Order fraternity for transportation provided to deliver a dream come true. Darrell resides at Brian Center of Asheville, a progressive, extended care nursing center. Darrell is attending classes at U.N.C.A. and hopes to become a counselor. The ultimate dream for the future, to help realize this goal, is a very expensive, electric wheelchair. Any potential facilitators of a Dream and investors in the future may find out how to contribute by writing a short note to Bob Newton, P.O. Box 1537, Cullowhee, N.C, 28723 or directly to Darrell Carson, Brian Center of Ashveille, 67 Mountain Brook Road, Asheville, N.C, 28805. Darrell Carson definitely is a young man with ability, intelligence, a sense of humor and a hope for the future. Hopefully, for the benefit of our humanity and society, he will be given the necessary assistance in fullment of this dream. Summer at Ellis Island As restoration work proceeds on both Ellis and Liberty Islands, the National Park Service says it looks forward to welcoming more volunteers this summer. According to a spokesman for the NPS, this year's students will continue the work begun by last year's recruits: clearing our rubble, gardening, raking, weeding and lawnmoving. Young Americans, who are ;at least 16 years of age, may apply for one of three program sessions scheduled this summer: June 16- July 6; July 14-August 3; and August 11-August 31. An application form, available from the Council, must be accompanied by a 100-word essay describing the applicant's interest in participating, a personal reference, and payment of $100 program fee which is fully refundable if the Council is unable to make a placement. Participants are responsible for their own transportation expenses to and from New York. However, all costs involved in the daily activities of the three-week program, including food and lodging are borne by the Council. To obtain additional information on Council's volunteer service project on Ellis and Liberty Island, or for an application form, write to: Gina Chase, Associate Director, Voluntary Service, Council on Internation Educational Exchange, 205 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017.
