  • Western Carolinian/December 6, 1984 News Lambda Chi Alpha Helps Raise Money for Research Send a mouse to college? This unlikely slogan is being trumpeted throughout the campus of Western Carolina University by the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. The mice that the Lambda Chis are sending to college are research animals. They are used in university laboratories throughout the United States for "ancer research. Each mouse costs 87e and the fraternity brothers have set as their goal raising funds to send 1000 mice "to college." This means that the young men are sporting buttons with the slogan and soliciting funds from members of the university community and Jackson County residents. The Lambda Chis undertook this project because they know that one out of every seven Americans will be touched by cancer. Since their chapter members, associate members, and little sisters number about seventy, that meant that ten of them will be affected. And the brothers know that cancer research is the key to cancer prevention and cancer cure. The American Cancer Society is the second largest source of cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the National Cancer Institute, an agency of the federal government. The Society's overall investment represents nearly one-third of the total ACS budget, amounting to $60 million. Nine million dollars of this is spent on leukemia- related research; remission rates are now reaching 909< and new drugs are constantly being tested. The American Cancer Society neither hires researchers nor operates its own laboratories. This enables the Society to place its research money where innovative and promising ideas are being explored. Its money supports scientists in established medical institutions and university research laboratories across the country. Those 1000 mice that the Lambda Chis will send to college will be used in such areas of research as investigation of carcinogenesis. Is there a master switch that activates cancer cells already in the body? If so, where is it and what turns it on? Are viruses the culprit? Laboratory mice will help scientists discover the answer. Other mice have had orange oil added to their diet and have resistant to stomach and lung cancers induced in the laboratory. Further experiments will reveal why this happens. Another experiment focuses WCU's annual Christmas Bazaar, sponsored by Hinds University Center, was held this past Tuesday. It featured holiday gifts by area craftsmen, local clubs and organizations. Poinsettias were popular items available at the sale. O'Neil Named Co-Op Student of the Month The Co-Op Student of the Month for December 1984 is Edwina Renee O'Neil, a Senior Nursing major from Canton, North Carolina. Ms. O'Neil worked as a Professional Nursing Assistant (PNA) in the Urology Unit at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Her duties as a PNA consisted of working with a Registered Nurse handling a group of patients. She was responsible for all aspects of patient care ranging from the monitoring of vital signs to iv therapy observation to Nephrostomy and Urostomy care. Ms. O'Neil's supervisor indicated that she handled her patient load very well and exhibited excellent organizational skills. As a result of her outstanding Iperformance Ms. O'Neil has been extended a full-time offer and plans to begin work in May 1985. The Co-Op Staff congratulates Ms. O'Neil on her accomplishments in her Co-Op position with Duke University Medical Center. THE STRIPPING HAS STOPPED at Idaho State U. football games, simply because the pep band has stopped playing "The Stripper" during football games. Past pep bands played the song at the end of the third quarter, accompanied by five to six impromptu student strippers. This year, however, a majority of band members objected to the tradition, and the band director agreed to cut the song. on antibodies that might be produced to recognize cancer cells only. These antibodies might help doctors in detecting cancers early and might be used to deliver drugs directly to a tumor, killing it but sparing healthy tissue. The prospect of results from this basic research is what sparked our interest, "says Allen Howard, vice president of Lambda Chi Alpha "We are university students and we know that universities across this country are actively searching for cancer cures It seemed appropriate that our fraternity chapter would undertake the special project of funding research animals for laboratory Many contributors when asked for the 87c for one mouse have contributed a,, nice round dollar. The fraternity began its campaign in late October, and then took the fund raising effort into the Jacson County community and back to their homes over the Thanksgiving holidavs If a Lambda Chi with a funny looking button asks you to send a mouse to college, be generous. NACA Offering Prize Papers Competition The National Association for Campus Activities announces its first Prize Papers competition offering cash prizes totaling $1,200, according to Chairman of the Board of Directors Max V. Vest. Open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty or staff of a business related to the college entertainment market, the competition is designed to recognize outstanding research and opinion papers in the field of campus activities. It demonstrates NACA's increasing interests in educating current and future campus activities professionals, Vest said. 'The Prize Papers Competition represents an important step toward realizing one of NACA's long-range goals of strengthening our educational offerings to membership," Vest said. 'This competition will further enhance the image of NACA as an organization interested in innovative ideas and research in the field, while offering staff and students an opportunity to write, be judged by peers and receive a cash award." Competition papers must be original unpublished works on a topic about or related to campus activities programming, such as management, volunteerism, leadership training and development, fine arts, film/video, contemporary entertainment, travel, recreation/ leisure, professional development and special constituencies. Papers must be eight to fifteen pages, typed and double-spaced. Cash prizes of $250 and $150 will be awarded for first and second place winners, respectively, in each of the three categories of undergraduate, graduate, faculty or professional staff. Papers will be judged by an anonymous panel on these criteria: originality and research, usefulness and applicability to the field of campus activities, content, composition and writing style, and thoroughness. Entry deadline for the competition is July 1, 1985, and winning entries will be published in a Prize Papers Competition issue of Programming in December 1985.
