  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, March 6,1969 Women's Recreation Association basketball team WRA To Attend National Basketball Championship Dr. Jim Hamilton announced Monday that WCU's Women's Recreation Association has been invited to attend the National Invitational Collegiate Women's Basketball Tournament this year. The tournament is to be held March 20- 22 at West Chester State College at West Chester, Pa. The tournament will host representatives from such big name schools as Ohio State University, Oregon State, University of Iowa, University of Kentucky, Central Michigan University, and Northwestern University. The tournament will be played on a single elimination basis with a consolation tourney. Thirteen girls from Western Carotin's team will leave for the tournament on March 18. However, WCU still has two games left on their fourteen game schedule. They will play host to High Point here Friday and then take on Greensboro for their final regular season game Saturday. Coached by Miss Betty Westmorland, the WRA has posted a remarkable record for the past three years, having lost only five games during this time. Last year they went undefeated and are 10-1 for the season thus far. Their only loss came at Greensboro when time ran out on them with the score two points in Greensboro's favor. Commenting on the upcoming match with Greensboro this week-end, Miss Westmorland said she thought it would be a different story this time. One of the star players, Jane Mc- Cleeves, was out with a leg injury last time, but will be back in action Friday. When asked what she felt their chances were in the tournament, Miss Westmorland replied, "I think we stand as good a chance as anyone else. We've played against competi tion as good as you'll find anywhere. If the girls play as well up there as they have played for the past two seasons, I'll be content, win, lose, or draw." The team which won twenty- four out of its last twenty- five games is led in scoring by a couple of Freshmen ladies this season. Karen Pike and Brenda Williams are tied, each averaging 13.9 points per game. Edna Jessup leads in rebounds, averaging 9 per game. Club Committee DiscussesGym Opening By WAT HOPKINS A committee of members of the Physical Education Club of WCU met Tuesday night, March 4, to finish plans for the opening of the gymnasium nights and week-ends beginning Spring Quarter. The P.E. Club is responsible for the opening of the gym so that the students can take full advantage of its facilities. Beginning Friday, March 28, the gym will be open nights, except Tuesday and Sunday, from 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday it will be open from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. The gym will not be open on Tuesday nights because of the movies that will be started again next quarter. The gym will remain open at its regular hours. Dan Young, chairman of the committee, stated that the first few weeks would be a trial period. Young stated that if gym and equipment were abused and there was no participation the gym would be closed. Young also emphasized the fact that no faculty members would be working, except for a supervisor, and that students would be in charge of all facilities. Since the gym will be run by students, lack of its use will only mean its closure. The trial period also will determine a more practical schedule. The gym may be closed on certain nights, be= cause of few students, for instance, and open on others. The P. E. Club feels that enough students will participate to keep the gym open. Young mentioned that the gym would be especially advantageous to P. E. students who would like to practice outside class periods.
