Williams, prominent North Carolina historian ami writer, and a faculty member at Western Carolina University since ll)5!s. has been named (.'rcighton Sossonuin I'rolessor ol History at WCU. lie is the lust person to reeeive the distinction since the prolessorship was created last veal'. He will hold the appointment, the first named prolessorship at WCU. lor a three-year term. a fund to support the award was established in I MS 3 in the Development foundation ol Western Carolina University through a gift Irom Dr. I). (.'rcighton Sossomon. professor emeritus ol history. Sossomon was a member ol the WCU laeultv lor 24 years and served in a number of posts including head ol the department ol social sciences and acting dean ol the college. Williams is a former head ol the department ol history, former assistant academic dean and former chairman ol the division ol social sciences ol the School ol Arts and Sciences. A scholar in American history. Williams is the recognized authority on William Alexander Graham, one ol North Carolina's best known I V> 111 century political figtlfes. Williams wrote his doctoral thesis on (iraham. a United Slates and Confederate Stales senator, a two-term governor and Secretary ol the Navy under President Millard I illmore. Williams is completing the last four volumes ol " I he Papers of William Alexander (iraham."an eight-volume series begun by the late Dr. J. (i. tie Roulhac. I he seventh volume is scheduled lor publication this spring, and the eighth is underway. Williams also is doing research for a planned biography of (iraham. Williams is the son ol Mr. and Mrs. A. I:. Williams ol High Point and is married to the former Sarah Clyde Johnson of High Point. He received Ins HA. degree from Duke Universitv ami his M.A. and Ph.D. Irom the Universitv of North Carolina at (Impel Hill. He joined the WCU laeultv 25 yearsagoand except lor 1960-64 when he taught at Chapel Hill while engaged in doctoral studies has been associated with WCU ever since. He received the 1976-77 Chancellor's Distinguished See Page 12 OPI fhe Society ol Manufacturing Engineers Education foundation has awarded Western Carolina University's department oi industrial education anil technology an equipment ami scholarship grant. fhe SI0.K00 grant will supplement university ami local support for the purchase ol an instructional r o b o t a n d industrial computer control devices, as well as provide lor an undergraduate scholarship ol S 1.000 for each ol the next lour years. fhe scholarship will be made to a freshman student majoring in manufacturing e n g i nc e rin g tech noIo g y beginning in the fall of 1984. Dr. Jerry Cook, associate professor ol industrial education anil technology and director o the SMI: grant project at WCU. said the grant will "aid in the growth and d e v e 1 o p m e n t of t h e manufacturing engineering technology, industria technology and relate* industrial programs" at the Cullowhee campus. "I he university plans to match the SMI: grant and manufacturing industries have promised to donate related equipment as a match." Cook said. fhe upturn in the U.S. economy coupled with the move in industry to update its manufacturing practices and to mtxlerni/e has caused a dramatic upturn in demand for well-trained ma nu fact tiring engineers. Starting salary oilers for the 19 8 3 m a n u 1 a c luring e n g i n e e r i n g graduates averaged $24,000 to $25,000. according to the data gathered by the College Placement Council. This is the second time Western Carolina University has received funds from the society's education foundation.
