EXCEL Offers Fun, Recreation Students at WCU often search for activities that will enrich their academic careers, their social lives, their personal growth, and their perspectives on the future. They want to meet new people, reap the benefits of various types of recreation, and, most of all, they want to have fun. But where can they find these things'? The answer is simple—a program called EXCEL. EXCEL (Exercise Class for Elders) is sponsored by the Center for Improving Mountain Living. It is a program geared toward giving older adults the opportunity to engage in healthful physical recreation, thereby enabling them to feci better about their age. It involves people from various lifestyles and occupational backgrounds. It provides information and support. Most of all. EXCEL reestablishes the "touch" so often lost between young and old, and enables them to learn from one another. That is where you, the student, comes in. A very important part of the EXCEL program is the participation of student volunteers who staff the program. The contact between the students and the older adults may well be the most rewarding aspect of EXCEL, and your participation as a volunteer is encouraged and welcomed. On Saturday mornings, at 9 am, students and older adults meet in the Reid Gym dance studio. After a brief period of warm-up exercises, students and older members choose activities such as swimming, bowling. and walking. After about an hour of recreation, the group gets back together for a short program led # by someone from the group. University, or community. Programs may include poetry readings, sing-a- longs. folk dancing, hiking, sleep problems, nutritional needs, and a happier later life. The program adjourns at Noon. EXCEL encourages participants to build upon positive attitudes toward the aging process. The stronger and healthier wc arc. the better we feel about ourselves. Members and volunteers provide special support for each other, and as the program's name- suggests, everyone "excels". Pam Edwards, the Student Director of EXCEL, is in the process of selecting student volunteers for the Spring, I984 Session. She is looking for people for any major who are ready to gain new experiences, enlarge their self-images, and take a new look at the future. Students volunteer three hours on Saturdays (except on University Holidays) in addition to a short orientation which is designed to prepare them for their roles as staff persons. Students arc encouraged to find out from their instructors is they can use the time they spend in EXCEL to fulfill project or class requirements. In that way. they can benefit academically as well as personally. The scheduled date for the first session is February 4. If you are interested in becoming a student volunteer for EXCEL this spring, please contact Pam Edwards at the Center for Improving Mountain Living, 227-7492. And remember—you can enrich your academic career, your social life, meet new people, reap the benefits of recreation, and have fun.
