  • PAGE 12/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/SEPTEMBER 14, More letters Visitor Encounters T Discrimination Dear Editor, After being invited to a party at Lambda Chi Alpha, myself and two other girls (all seniors al Western) and an English guv on vacation decided to go. We- dressed as tor anv party, in blue jeans etc. and lixiked presentable, or at least we thought so. How ever, as we arrived evervune stopped what they were doing and stared open mouthed at our English friend. He was wearing blue jeans, white shirt, black tie and a haseball call anil tins seemed to he causing some commotion. Despite the attention we tried to carry on and have a good time. But before we could even get a beer some guv grabbed hold of our friend 1978 and demanded to know w ho inv ited him. After a lot of arguing everything was sorted out and the guy walked off muttering that he. as sargent of arms, had his job to do and if our friend hadn't have been with three girls he would be out on his ass. Once again we tried to ignore everyone staring and made a second attempt to get some beer. We then stood talking for about fifteen minutes, obviotislv entertaining all around. Enough is enough and I Suggested vve go dance so we could get away from the limelight. 1'verv thing seemed fine but as vve finished dancing our friend was approached again, except this time bv OM of the fi'.V "Brothers.'' accompanied bv two of a similar si/e. I thought this a little unfair as our friend is only 5'M" and this guv was pushing him in the chest ami shouting al him; "Who th* hell invited vou!" Despite our friend's attempt at an explanation, the big "moose" kept pushing and shouting. Things were pelting out of hand so I tried to explain who invited The U.S. Navy Officer Information Team will be on campus September 26 thru 28. Naval Officers will be on hand to talk to interested persons concerning Officer Positions in Nuclear Power, Aviation, Supply Corps (business management), Line, and several scholarship programs. Drop by and see if the "New Navy" is for you. him when this guy started pushing me and shouting, •Get lost, this guys got a mouth, let him talk for himself." , Finallv after he'd nearly pushed me down the stairs and finished swearing, he grabbed our friend and took him in the back telling us three girls to wait here. While this was going on all the other "Brothers" stood around grinning. We couldn't believe what was happening, all we could see was our friend getting dragged into the back like a lamb to slaughter. Fortunately the guv realized he was beginning to look foolish in front of his fellow "Brothers" and suddenly became very apologetic, explaining that this was merely his wav of getting our attention. Then the Sargent at Amis reappeared and told us that he didn't like anyone that looked like a freak, but because our friend is Lnglish it wa okay if he stayed. He finished oil this little speech with; "At least he's white!" What if our friend was American, just another Western student, would he have escaped so lightly? White or black? Is this normal behavior? What kind of impression does this give our friend or any visitor? A verv bad one of fraternity houses in general and Western's in particular. If it w as an isolated incident maybe it could be excused but situations like this are fairly common. Agreed, there are bad apples in every barrell but why are they given a free rei"-' Why don't other "Brothers" point out their mistakes rather than cover them up with lame excuses'.' Is it that commeradery overides everything, even when a fellow "Brother" is dead wrong? Are all "Fraternity Brothers" like the two we encountered? I hope not. 1 hope that the ones who aren't, the ones who really care, read this letter and try to insure that this type of thing never happens again. Will the world ever be safe for freaks?
