Clubs, Organizations _ Alpha Epsilon Rho is sponsored' jointly by the Speech and Theatre Arts Department and WWCU. Its membership is open to all interested students involved in or studying courses in broadcasting or the operation of WWCU. Membership is also open to professional broadcasters in the area. Alpha Kappa Psi is the oldest professional business fraternity in the United States. Installed at WCU in 1969, it is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, male and female, who are seeking degrees in Business Administration or Industrial Technology. Among their activities, Alpha Kappa Psi sponsors Career Exploration Day and the American Cancer Society Bike-a-thon. Alpha Lambda Delta is a national academic honor society for freshmen who achieve a 3.50 QPR in their first semester of college work while carrying a normal academic load. Initiation occurs in the spring of the freshman year and members are active during their sophomore year. The purposes of the organization are to promote intelligent living and high standards of learning and to encourage superior attainment among freshmen. Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was founded December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithica ,N.Y. by a group of students who desired to maintain a more intimate contact with one another than the classroom study permitted. Thus, being the first predominately black fraternity their ideals are high, as they continue to promote brotherhood, scholarship, and high moral character among their members. Their colors are black and old gold and they are "Servants of All." Alpha Phi Omega is the national service fraternity for college and university students, founded in 1925 and now active on more than 450 campuses in the United States. Alpha Phi Omega serves four areas: the campuus, the community, the chapter, and the country in a program of leadership, fellowship, and service. Membership is open to all college students. Alpha Phi Sigma, National Scholastic Honor Society, was organized in 1931 for the purpose of promoting and maintaining high scholastic standards in colleges and universities. Students may become members of the fraternity by maintaining a 3.25QPR for 60 hours of credit at Western Carolina University. Alpha Psi Omega was established to stimulate interest in dramatic activities at Western Carolina University, to secure for the university all the advantages and mutual benefits provided by a large national honor fraternity, and to elect students to membership as a reward for participation in plys staged by the university. Alpha Xi Delta is just the beginning of a new and exciting life. The life of an Alpha Xi is filled with friendship, love, courage and devotion. Her life is also an active one. In the fall, you see her in the marching band, petitioning for the Jackson County Humane Society and participating in Greek Week. Then in the winter you can see her babysitting for the Newcomer Club, going to Golden Weekend, and participating in the swim meet. Of curse, spring is just as lively with participation in Spring Fling and Special Olympics. American Chemical Association presents many aspects of chemistry to its members and encourages their professional growth. During the year, interest in chemistry is promoted in high schools of Western North Carolina by the ACS Student Affiliates. Membership is open to all students with science related majors. American Home Economics Association is an educational and scientific organization whose purpose is to improve the quality of standards of individual and family life. The program of AHEA provides opportunities for home economics majors to focus their professional knowledge and efforts on the changing needs of individuals and families. Membership is open to undergraduate students enrolled in a home economics program leading to a baccalaureate degree with a major in home economics or one of its specialized areas. American Society of Interior Designers is open to all WCU students who are interested in the interior design profession. Some of the AS ID objectives are: to emphasize and promote professional and social aspects of student activities on campus, to enlarge the students' understanding of the present and future scope of the interior design profession and to facilitate the preparation of students to assume responsibilities as professional designers. Anthropology Club is open to all interested persons. The club members meet anthropologists, view films, hear lecturers, have discussions and socials. Trips are taken to archeological sites and professional meetings. Art Student League, open to all art majors, directed by a central committee of eight elected from each class levelm has as its purpose to develop leadership, to provide programs in art, and to provide continuous cooperation between students and faculty members. Baptist Student League challenges you to join with us in inspiration, fellowship, and service. We think we have something to do with what it means to be an educated person as well as a religious person. We have something to do with helping students secure an appreciation of their religious heritage and their religious experience. And, we have something to do with making possible their engagement with society, locally, nationally, and internationally. Biology Club promotes interest in the field of biology through participation in scientific activities such as lectures, discussions, and field trips. The organization provides a medium where faculty and students can become acquainted in a relaxed social atmosphere. It offers opportunities for acquired knowledge to be put to practical use. Membership is open to any student who is interested in biology and its related fields. Black Student Fellowship encourages you to maintain or develop your Christian life while here at Wetern Carolina University. The fellowship plans programs that are relevant to the black Christian experience. Bible study, social activities, and seminars on the different aspects of Christian growth are only a few of the things you can be a part of by joining the black student fellowship. Canterbury House is the Episcopal Student Center located next to St. David's Episcopal Church (behind the stadium). The Episcopal Chaplain is available to talk with members of the University community and to offer spiritual direction. The Canterbury House also offers counseling for individuals, couples, and families. Fees for counseling are based on a ability to pay. Catholic Student Center, although affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, is open to all students at WCU. The center is located a short distance off the main campus and offers relaxation, recreation, and Christian fellowship. Cecil W. Mann Psychology Club has interest in psychology as a behavioral science as its main objective. Meetings featuring lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and other activities reflect the ideas of the club. Any student interested in the club's activities is welcome to participate. Circle K is a coed non fraternal club. It provides an opportunity for students who want to get involved in life by working with and helping other people as well as improving various conditions of the community. Circle K is the largest collegiate service organization and is a part of the Circle K Kiwanis family. Membership is open to all interested people. College Democrats is composed of politically interested students seeking to learn about politics through participation. This organization's members work on campaigns for Democratic candidates, sponsor speakers, seminars, and the election year Voter Awareness drive and absentee ballot drive. Membership is open to all students wishing to promote activities of the Democratic party. College Republicans stimulate in young people an active interest in government affairs and increase the efficiency of popular government. Membership is open to anyone who upholds the goal of the College Republicans Club. Contemporary History Club is open to all students interested in knowing more about our modern world. The club organizes meetings which deal with contemporary problems and which emphasize open discussion. Social events are also planned to which faculty members from the History Department are invited. Criminal Justice Club provides members with an opportunity to learn more about our present criminal justice system from a professional's point of view. This is accomplished by field trips, fund raisers and guest speakers. Any student is welcome to become a member. Data Processing Management' Association is designed for students who are planning careers in data processing. DPMA seeks to provide additional opportunities for students to learn more about their chosen area of study as well as promote interaction between students and professionals in data processing. DPMA is open to any student at Western Carolina University. All Information Systems majors are expected to join. All members receive DPMA's monthly magazine as a part of their membership fee. Delta Sigma Phi fraternity was founded December 10, 1889 as a cooperative movement of the students from the City College of New York University. Delta Omicron chapter at WCU affiliated nationally in December of 1959. Delta Sig ranks among the top 20 fraternities in membership as well as number of chapters. The two major social functions are Carnation Ball and Shipwreck. They are nationally known as the Fraternity of Engineered Leadership. Delta Zeta: to be proud that Delta Zeta is the largest national sorority, to be active, to be a part of everything and to be sociable, a part of fraternity contests, campus activities, Cullowhee Special Olympics, Pike's Peak, Bloodmobile, bowling tournaments, and intramurals. To be winners, to be outstanding Greek women, to encourage personal accomplishments, to party, a beach wekend, Secret Rosebuddy, Pledge Presentation. To love, to belong, to commit yourself to high ideals and goals. To be honored. To be a Delta Zeta. Economic Affairs Club provides an atmosphere for students to develop a more personal relationship with members of the profession; to enable students to more fully explore and develop their interests within the fields of econ and finance. Membership is open to all who share an interest in Econ and Finance. Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a program to confront athletes and coaches, and through them, the youth and the nation, with the challenge and adventure of following Christ, in the fellowship of the church. Forensic Society strives to maintain excellence in all forms of forensic activity. Members participate in debates locally and intercollegiately. Membership is open to students interested in all types of forensic activity. Geo Club is open to students interested in the promotion of Earth Sciences. Industrial Education and Technology Club stimulates interest in technology and its industrial application as well as educating members concerning industrial teaching and related fields. During the school year, members tour outstanding industrial facilities, invite guest speakers to campus and participate in state and national conventions. Membership is open to all interested students. International Student Organization promotes the feeling of international understanding and friendship through meetings, programs, and activities wi^iin the university and in the general community. One of the major activities is the International Festival Week sponsored each spring. Membership is open to all students who wish to advance the goals and objectives of the organization. Kappa Alpha was founded in December, 1865 at Washington and Lee University. Along with furthering the traditions of the Old South and living up to the ideals of Robert E. Lee, the brothers hold a traditional Old South Ball, participate in intramural sports, and other campus activities. Kappa Alpha Psi, now comprised of functioning predominantly black undergraduate and graduate chapters on major campuses, was founded on January 5, 1911 by a group of men with a "Dream" on the campus of Indiana University. Kappa Alpha Psi is dedicated to the principle of "Achievement," through a truly democratic fraternity, and is open to college men everywhere regardless of their color, religion, or national origin. Kappa Kappa Psi promotes the existence and welfare of the university bands and cultivates a wholesome respect for their activities and achievements. The fraternity honors outstanding men who participate in WCU bands through the privilege of membership. Membership is open to all students participating in band regardless of their academic major. Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education, was founded in 1909 at the University of Illinois. The Mu ETA Chapter was organized at WCU in 1970. To be eligible for membership, students must rank scholastic-ally in the top 20 percent of the student body, have at least a 3.20 average, and exhibit commendable personal qualities. Membership is open to both undergraduates and graduates who intend to make education their profession. Last Minute Productions is the major student programming organization of WCU. Emphasis is placed in the fields of so social, cultural, educational, and recreationl entertainment. Programs include major concerts by popular groups, coffeehouses and mini-concerts, casino nights, games, tournaments, current films, videotape programs, and dinner theatre. Also, you can learn to kayak and canoe our local rivers, or take a ski trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Offices are located on the second floor of the University Center. Lambda Chi Alpha was established at WCU in 1969. The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity has been the recipient of the President's Council Scholarship Trophy for nine years and was selected as the Outstanding Fraternity for 1982-83. Campus highlights are the annual Sorority Kidnap and the Raft Race. The social highlight of Lambda Chi Alpha is the annual Crescent Weekend. Math and Computer Science Club is an organization which encourages interaction between students and professors interested in computer science and the many branches of mathematics. The Club provides an opportunity for members to exchange ideas and be exposed to new developments and concepts. Membership is open to all interested persons, and all math majors and computer science majors are encouraged to join. Medical Record Association provides an opportunity for students in the Medical Record Administration program and other interested students to associate and exchange ideas related to the profession and to promote the interest therein. Mortar Board is a national honor society for seniors formed at WCU in 1975 and charted on April 10, 1983. Its purpose is to recognize and encourage superior scholarship, leadership, and service. Members are selected and initiated in the spring of their junior year. To be eligible for consideration for selection, students must have a 3.00 QPR, be a junior, and show evidence of leadership and service to the university and/or community. Marketing and Management Club allows members to fully explore the fields of marketing and management. This is accomplished through the use of guest speakers, field trips, fund raisers, and contests. Membership is open to any interested student. Marshals Club exists to recognize students who have excelled academically. To be eligible for membership juniors must have a QPR of 3.60 or above and sophomores must have a QPR of 3.80 or above. The purpose of the Marshals Club is to serve the university by providing ushers for public programs and to usher at graduation National Art Education Association provides a smooth transition from the art teaching preparation program to professional practice, to raise and maintain the standards of art education on campus and in the community, to learn more about teaching art, to sponsor service projects, and to enlist future teachers from high school, promoting as a career both art education and other areas of art. National Student Speech Hearing and Language Association is a national organization, recognized by the professional society. ASH A, as the official organization for students interested in speech, language, and hearing processes and disorders. The organization provides access to professional literature, opportunity for interaction with professionals, assistance in the transition from academic to professional life, and educational growth derived from participation in activities and programs on the local, state, and national levels. Nomad is a collection of literary and artistic works, published annually by the students of WCU. It is representative of all types of literary and artistic works produced by students and faculty. cont. on page 14

The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
