  • Western Carolinian/April 14, 1983 / Sports Briefs CATS DOMINATE CATAMOUNT INVITATIONAL Saturday's rains did not force the cancellation of the Catamount Invitational Outdoor Track and Field Meet and the Cats made the most of the opportunity with a dominating performance in the meet. All fourteen events were held on Western's outdoor, all-weather track and field facility. Three events - the long jump, high jump and pole vault - had to be cancelled as the Cats had winners in 10 of 14 events. Western totalled 95 team points with the Cullowhee Track Club and Mars Hill each taking 16 points. Brevard had 10 team points with Milligan scoring four. Winners for the Catamounts included the 400 meters relay squad (Dwayne Norman, Anthony James, Miles Nicholson and Leonard Williams) and the mile relay team (Mark Whisenhunt, Miles Nicholson, Mark Newsome and Haywood Smith). Other individual standout were Charles Weddington, the winner in the shot put and discus and Robert Baker, the winner in the mile run and the 5,000 meters run. Miles Nicholson won the 400 meters, Jon Marr the 110 high hurdles, Haywood Smith the 400 meters intermediate hurdles, and Chris Sheppard, 800 meters. The Cullowhee Track Club had three individual winners. Phil Roberts won the 10,000 meters with James Ford taking the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Brevard's Bill Sayre won the javelin in the other individual result. There were no school or meet records in the event held in a persistent rain Saturday afternoon. The wins over Mars Hill and Milligan put Western's dual meet record at 3-1. In dual meet action earlier in the week at Furman University (Tuesday, April 5), the Catsscored 66 points. That total was shy of Furman's 85, but way ahead of Carson—Newman's 22 point total. In that meet, the Cats had Anthony James with wins in the long and triple jump, Charles Weddington in the shot put, Haywood Smith in the 400 meters intermediate hurdles, Miles Nicholson in the 400 meters dash and the mile relay team. Western's next track and field action will be Saturday, April 16, at the Furman Invitational. TENNIS TEAM FACES HEAVY SCHEDULE-Rainy weather has played havoc with WCU's tennis schedule and will cause the Cats to play every day this week. The Cats, 2-9 overall had weather roblems in their last match. Last Friday the Cats lost a 5-0 rain-shortened decision at Davidson, but had two matches rained out in the weekend trip to Davidson. Saturday matches rained out included contests with Marshall and V.M.I, in Southern Conference action. Those two matches are rescheduled for April 15 and 16 at UT-C. This coming weekend the Cats will have those matches and contests with The Citadel and UT-C. The Cats will take on The Citadel and Marshall Friday in Chattanooga and V.M.I, and UT-C Saturday. The Cats played Belmont Abbey Monday and lost, 7-2. The Cats travelled to Mars Hill Tuesday. Wednesday the Cats had a home match scheduled with Catawba with the Cats scheduled to travel to Carson-Newman Thursday (April 14) for a make-up match. Next week, the Cats play at Appalachain State (April 19) and at home against Carson-Newman (April 20). GOLF TEAM TO PLAY AT THE CITADEL-Western Carolina's golf team will take to the road this coming weekend for play in The Citadel Invitational to be played April 14-16 in Charleston, SC. The Cats, who were scheduled to hit the links Tuesday against Erskine and Presbyterian College at Holly Forest in Sapphire Valley, will be participating in The Citadel hosted tournament that will be played on the new Patriot's Point golf course in Charleston, SC. That action will precede Western's play in the April 25-27 Southern Conference Championships. LADY CATS DROP TWO IN TOURNAMENT-- Western Carolina University's women's softball team lost two games in the North Carolina State University Tournament held in Raleigh this past weekend. Western, 5-6 after the tournament, fell to Cleveland State, 5-3, and East Carolina, 9-8, in the double elimination event. The Lady Cats were scheduled to open their home schedule this Tuesday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader with UNC Charlotte and the team will be at the UNC Charlotte Tournament this coming weekend (April 15- 16). The Lady Cats will be at Appalachian State next Monday (Apeil 18) for two games and will host North Carolina State Wednesday (April 20) in a 3 p.m. double header. Spring Football The 1983 spring football game at Western Carolina University was an exception to the rule. Traditionally, spring football games are not well played and rarely excites the fans. The annual Purple Gold Spring Game at Whitmire Stadium last Friday evening was a success from the football staff's viewpoint as well as a spectator's pleaser. "lt was probably the best spring game we've held here," said Bob Waters, WCU's head football coach, following the Gold team's 29-26 win over the Purple team. "1 was very pleased with the play of our quarterbacks and the overall intensity in the game," noted Waters. "We went into the game with questions about our quarterbacks and depth and came out of it feeling better about both situations," he added. Junior Jeff Gilbert solidified his position as the Catamounts' No. I signal caller with a 16 of 24 passihg performace for 231 yards. However, rising sophomore Willie Perkins served notice as he completed 12 of 28 passes for 197 yards against the No. 1 defensive unit. "Jeff made a minimum number of mistakes and Willie played with a lot of poise and both threw the ball extremely well," said Waters. The problem of a lack of depth appeared to be moving towards being solved as the Purple team, composed of reserve players, rolled up 256 yards of offense against the No. 1 defensive unit and made several big defensive plays. The receivers got a workout as 71 passes were attempted. Kristy Kiser and Eric Rasheed, last year's starting wideouts, each caught five passes as did tight end Alonzo Carmichael who was returning after missing last season following knee surgery. The Catamounts' kicking game continued to be impressive as Dean Biasucci connected on both his field goal attempts and Steve Kornegay had several long punts. Basketball Recruits Western Carolina University has announced the signing of four high school basketball standouts to athletic grants-in-aid on the initial signing day, this past Wednesday, for the National Letter of Intent. The signees, announced by WCU's head basketball coach Steve Cottrell. are 6-8'/2 Chris Tipton of Mountain Heritage High in Burnsville, 6-1 Vincent "Spotlight" Walker of Ashbrook High in Gastonia; 6-5 Brian Brunson of Great Falls (SC) High; and 6-7 Richard Rogers of Choctawhatchee High in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
