January 28, 1982/ 12 Athletic Motivation One of the nation's top psychologists involved in athletic motivation will visit Western Carolina University Monday, Feb. 1. under the sponsorship of WCIPs departments of health, physical education and recreation and psychology and the Visiting Scholars Program. Dr. Thomas Tutko. professor of psychology at San Jose State Universitv and founder of the Institute of Athletic Motivation, will address area teachers, coaches, psychologists and parents of athletes at a 7 p.m. presentation in the auditorium of WCU'S Forsyth Building. There is no charge for admission. Over the past 12 years, Tutko has worked directly with thousands of athletes and coaches in the area of athletic fulfillment. He has worked with, observed and advised a number of professional teams including the Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers. Other pro football teams he has been involved in include the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Rams, the Miami Dolphins, the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos. In baseball, he has worked with the Oakland A's and Pittsburgh Pirates, and he has worked with the San Francisco Warriors and San Diego Rockets in basketball. Tutko is currently doing research on the role of exercise in learning and personality development. He is the co-author of several books in the area of the psychoilogy of coaching, sports psyching, athletic motivation and problem athletes. Coaches on all levels should find his presentation useful. Tutko will meet with WCU students at a reception at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Foyer of Reid Gymnasium. LMP Happenings On the calendar for this coming weekend from Last Minute Productions are two major activities, both falling on Friday night. The first of these is the movie Fame, a musical/drama film scheduled for Friday at 8:00 p.m. If you'd rather dance the night away, there will be a disco in the Cherokee Room of Hinds Universitv Center from 9- 12 midnight. For skiing enthusiasts, there will be a downhill ski trip to Catalooche on February 6th and a cross country trip on February 7th to Clingman's Dome. Scheduled for Thursday the 4th is a coffeehouse gathering, featuring folksinger Mark Smith in the Universitv Cafeterias. Beginning and intermidiate Yoga with Dr. Stuart Kaplan will begin Tuesday, February 2nd in the Cherokee Room of the UC. For more information, call Last Minute Productions at 227-7479. Contemporary History Club Wants Inquiring Minds Do you ever wonder if the events in Poland might be more important than the Super Bowl? Do you really know what an Afghan looks like0 Do events in African states seem to be irrelevant'.' If you have a spirit of inquiry which goes beyond the classroom and beyond your own discipline, perhaps vou will be interested to hear that a new organization is being created on the Western Carolina U Diversity campus. This club will develop programs and activities which will look at current problems in historical context to help provide a greater understanding of the world in which we live. All persons interested in this kind of activity are invited to attend the organizational meeting of the Contemporary History Club. The membership will not be limited by major, age. wealth, or social status. An inquiring mind is all that is necessarv. The organizational meeting will be on Wednesdav. Head Librarian Bill Kerwin stated that "All students should feel free to pay us a visit,*" Audition to be Held Auditions for "Elixir of Love" by Gaetano Donizetti will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m. in the recital hall of Western Carolina University's Music-English Building. Persons auditioning for the opera are asked to bring a prepared selection of music. There are roles for five primaries, three males and two females, and a 16-member chorus. Production dates will be April 22 and 23. The "Elixir of Love" is being produced by WCU's departments of speech and theater arts and music. Discover Yourself! The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
