  • m Sports Time Changes The tip-off time for WCU's home basketball game (November 29 against Middle Tennessee State) has been changed from the listed 7:30 p.m. time to 7:00 p.m. Cottrcl Basketball Harp Honored Western Carolina university will unofficially open the 1980-1981 basketball season this Saturday night when the Catamounts host the Scotland National Basketball team in a pre-season exhibition at Reid Gym. Saturday's game, which will not count in the Cat's won or lost column, will be the final tune-up for Western before the team opens the regular season a week from Friday, November 28, in Atlanta against Georgia Tech, a member of the ACC. The Catamount's official home opener is scheduled for Saturday evening, November 29, against Middle Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Scotland National team, composed primarily of players from that nation's Olympic team, is currently on a 15 game tour of the United States. The team has already played at the University of Minnesota and at Randolph-Macon College and will play VPI, James Madison. VMI, and Campbell this week before the game against WCU. International rules will be used in the exhibition game and the most visible differences between the international rules and NCAA rules are the 30 —cond shot clock and wider foul lanes. The three-point basket, to be used exclusively in the Southern Conference this year, will remain in effect. The Catamounts, 17-10 in '79-'80 and the leagues third place team, will return eight lettermen to the team while adding four recruits. The team, coached by fourth-year head coach Steve Cottrell, has gone from 7-19 in '78 to last season's mark and were picked in pre-season polls to finish first in the conference this season. Carr, a 17.4 point scorer as a freshman (and an SC All-Freshman team selection) and Trimier, a 2nd team All-Conference selection) was the league's top re bounder as a frosh (10.2 a game). Young added 159 assists to the Cat's attack while having a fine season. Senior point guard Larry Caldwell and sophomore post Si Simmons, 6-9, could also start at their respective positions while sophomore Greg Young, a 6-5 scrambler, who has been playing very well in the preseason practice and senior crowd pleaser Clarence DesBordes give Western excellent experience and a myraid of line-up combinations from the veterans. Although the Cats lost hard-working center Harry Dolan, and supersubs Forrest Callaway and Jim McCallister to graduation, the '80-'81 recruiting class could rank as the finest of Coach Cottrell's perennially excellent crops. Bill Utley, a six-foot-seven from Apex, NC by way of Brevard (Florida) Junior College, an intimidating potential blocking machine, figures to battle for a lot of minutes at the low post position I'ai Shui] six toot-eight freshman can play tow forward and post with some seasoning and has been impressive in practice. Scrapp\ Mike MacFat lane, another six Tool- eight freshman, gives Cottrell the best depth as post he lias ever had in Cullowhee Ihe fourth recruit, five-foot-eleven Quentin Moore, from Norfolk, Virginia, is another freshman who could squeeze in a good portion of minutes at the point guard position. The combination of experience and south, both in the starting line-up and in the reserves, appears to be one of the strongest features ol the learn. With Dennis and Can, particularly, a lot of points should again come from tlie perimeter. Improved scoring from the inside and another hustling defensive team could make the Catamounts as solid a club as there is in the Southern Conference. A variety of nagging injuries has slowed the Catamounts during preseason workouts and a challenging schedule-particularly early in the season in those openers at Georgia Tech and with Middle Tennessee and late in the year when the last ten games of the season are Southern Conference contests, all in the month of Feburary.
