  • Newsbriefs Awarded Grant A Western Carolina University research project designed to study exploratory behavior in young children has been awarded a $53,000 grant by the Spencer Foundation of Chicago. Dr. Bruce B. Henderson, an associate professor of psychology in charge of the project, said the exploratory behavior of more than KM) Western North Carolina children, ages 3 to 8, will be studied during the two-year project. "We hope this research will give us a better idea of why children do or do not display exploratory behavior," he said. "Presumably, kids who explore more arc going to learn more, so we also hope we'll find ways to encourage children to explore more, "both in and out of school." Henderson said he has divided the project into three parts, fhe first part, he said, will deal with finding ways to measure such exploratory behavior as asking questions and examining novel objects. He said the second part is designed to compare the way mothers interact with children in novel situations. with the way fathers interact with children in the same situations. lhc third part, he said, will focus on specific strategies to encourage children to explore more. lhc Spencer foundation of Chicago is a private foundation that supports research in education and developmental psychology.
