  • Organizations and Eventsr Chelsea Exhibits Iwo Western Carolina University graduate students in ar. Judy Collier McManus of Sylva and Terance K. Painter of Waynesville. will present graduate thesis exhibits Nov. II through Dec. 5 in the Chelsea Gallery of WCU's Hinds University Center. Works by Mrs. McManus will include glass and soft sculpture. Painter will display functional pottery and prints. Both artists will be honored at a 3 p.m. opening reception in the gallerv on Nov. 11. Mrs. McManus is the wife of James McManus and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric J. Collier of Arlington, Ga. She is a 1971 graduate of Early County High is Blakely, Ga., and is working toward a master's degree in studio art at WCU. She has been studying glass blowing under David Nichols, artist in residence at Western. Painter, husband of Anita Moore Painter, resides at 114 Whispering Pines Drive in Waynesville. He is the son of Mrs. Ruth M. Painter and late Carl Painter Jr. He is a 1974 graduate of Tuscola High and a summa cum laude graduate of WCU's undergraduate program in art. While at WCU Painter has served as president of the Art Students League and a member of the lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Committee. Both artists recently had works exhibited in the 33rd annual Southern Highland Handicraft Guild Fair at the Civic Center in Asheville and have had pieces in the Spring Mills traveling exhibit. Consort Performs The sounds of the Middle Ages and Renaissance with double-reed krummhorns and schawms. rebecs, organ- ettos and rauschpfeiffes will fill the recital hall of Western Carolina University's Music-English Building Tuesday, Nov. 11, as Cincinnati's Early Music Consort performs. The five musicians, masters of the very old instruments and music, will perform at 8 p.m. under the sponsorship of WCU's Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Program. Music will be from the 13th through 16th centuries and by composers such as Machaut, Dufay. Josquin and di Lasso. Members of the Early Music Consort are Ben Bechtel. James Carrier, Lewis Peterman, Paula Peterman and William Reynolds, all accomplished musicians. Bechtel holds a masters degree in music from Indiana University and has directed early music ensembles at Thiel College and the University of Cincinnati. Carrier has performed professionally under the direction of Robert Craft anil Alexander Schneider and holds a master's degree from Boston University. Lewis Peterman, who holds a master's from Northwestern University, formerly played principal clarinet with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and Mrs. Peterman, trained as a flutist, has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra as guest soloist. Although the program is largely instrumental. William Reynold performs several vocal selections and lie also performs several dances. Reynolds, a tenor, holds a bachelor's degree from Davidson College and a master's trom the University of Cincinnati. He later studied French and history at the Universite Paul Valery in Montellicr, France. Other unusual instruments featured will be the dulzian rankett, psaltery, harp, viol, recorder, lute, chalumeau and a variety of percussion. The group pei forms in period costumes. Subscribers to the LCE Program will be admitted without charge. Western students may purchase tickets for $1 in advance and $2 at the door. Public tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Percussion Recital Western Carolina University's Percussion Ensemble will give a recital at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6. in the recital hall of the Music-English Building. Ihe Student ensemble will perform under I lie direction of Mario Gaetano, an instructor of music and percussionist, and Robin Dauer. an artist-lecturer and horn player. The featured soloist with the Percussion Ensemble will be Jennifer Jones, a senior at Pisgah High School in Canton. Miss Jones will play the Marimba in a work by Jack Jenny. The recital is open to the public free of charge. CAP Drill "Red Dog 1-7-0. this is Blue Dog 1-2-0. An observer at Nantahala Lake reports hearing an explosion near the dam. With those instructions last Saturday morning, a day of practicing response to emergency situataions began lor the Jackson County Civil Air Patrol. Pilots Lt. Ron Thurman, of the Swain County squadron, and Senior Member Frank Holdtn. if the Jackson County squadron, flew four missions out of Jackson County Airport for. approximately. 5 hours of flying time. Saturday's drill was one of two major exercises held annuallv bv the Civil Air Patrol, and graded by the U.S. Air Force. Officials were enthusiastic about the results of last week's training. The Jackson County Civil Air Patrol, commanded by Captain Dallas Stephens, meets each Sunday evening at 7 at the Jackson County Airport for in-class instruction. Splits and Stations: A water station will be at the 2.8 _.. mile marker. Splits will be called at the 1 mile and 3 mile markers. Numbers and T-shirts: Numbers and T-shirts will be given to each entrant on race day. Awards: Trophies will be given to the top two male runners and the top female runner. Ribbons will be given to the top runner in each of these Men's and Women's divisions: 17 and under; 18 to 28; 28 to 40 and 40 and over.
