  • Poetry Workshop Richard Hugo, a nationally acclaimed contemporary poet, ssill conduct a poetry reading and a workshop at Western Carolina University Thursday, Nov, 13. under the sponsorship of The Arts Journal's Poetry Forum Series. The reading is set for 8 p.m. in Founders Auditorium in the Mountain Heritage Center, following the workshop from 2 until 4 p.m. in Room 147 of the center. Both events are open to the public without charge. Workshop participants are invited to submit up to two poems for consideration by Hugo. Deadline for submission is Nov.ll. and poems should be sent to Poetry Workshop, Harold Farwell, Department of English, Western Carolina Universitv, Cullowhee. N.C 28723. Hugo, director of creative writing at the University of Montana and editor of the Yale Series of Younger Poets, has published 12 volumes of poetry. A native of Seattle. Wash., he has received several prestigious awards for his work, including the Theodore Roethke Memorial Award in 1976 for his collection of poems. "What Thou Lovcst Well Remains American." and the Northwest Writers Book of the Year Award and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, both for "Death of the Kapowsin Tavern"(1965). In 1974 and 1976 he was nominated for the National Book Award. His "Selected Poems" was a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in 1980 and ssas assarded lhc Melsin Cane Prize from Ihe Poetry Society of America. He also received the Ken Boyle Award for his book on creative writing, "The Triggering Town." Educated al the University of Washington, Hugo is a poct-in-i-cvidcncc at the University of Arkansas in Little- Rock. Previously he has taught as a visiting professor at the Universities of Iowa, Colorado and Washington. His most recent collections of poetry are "White (cnier" and "The Right Madness On Skye." The Poetry Forum Series, sponsored by The Ails Journal Of Asheville. is funded in part by grams front Ihe National Endowment for the Arts Literature Program and the North Carolina Humanities committee, Good morning, Cullowhee.
