  • Activities Page 21 Choir A Hit Singing in several excellent concert situations made the fund raising and intense rehearsals worth while for the WCU Concert Choir. The group picked apples and washed ears in preparation for the tour that took them to several cities throughout Georgia and Florida, including Disney World. The choir left WCU at 7:30 a.m. on October 8th for the six-day trip that included 11 concerts at high schools, churches, and a college. Free will offerings were received at the churches and along with the fund raisers the group earned approximately $1,000, meeting the expenses of the trip. Food was prepared at practically every stop, and the students stayed in homes for three nighs to save money. The trip was a unique experience for the performers, and Dr. Holquist. Director of choral activities at WCU, felt that the group portrayed a positive attitude for the university. Holquist went on to say that the tour gave WCU exposure to high school seniors who are considering college. Music consisting of love songs, sacred classics, spirituals, and pop tunes was chosen to appeal to all age groups. More than one person chuckled over the novelty tune, "The Queen to Me a Royal Pain Doth Give," by P.D.Q. Bach. The choir sang their final tour concert at Lithia Springs, Georgia. Jogging Trail Open WCU will inaugurate its new fitness jogging trail Monday, Oct. 19, with a free two-mile run for WCU students. The run will begin at 4 p.m. at the start of the new trail behind Reid Gymnasium. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m., and students may enter as individuals or as teams of three men or three women. Prizes will be awarded. The new trail, which is open to students and the public, is four feet wide and runs just over two miles along a scenic route that circles WCU's softball field, track and 'I!*: li.i i The WCU Concert Choir and Early Music Ensemble just got back from fall tour and will perform their tour music October 20 at 8:00 pm in the Music/English Recital Hall. Admission is free. golf practice range between Reid Gymnasium and Highway 107. The surface of the trail is granite sand which is designed to cushion each runner's stride. Within the next few weeks the trail also will feature distance markers every one-fourth mile, and future plans call for the addition of six exercise stations along the trail. Work on the new trail was started three years ago under the direction of WCU's department of health, physical education and recreation. Persons who have worked on the project are professors Schrader, Dr. Jim Hamilton and Dr. Arthur Pilch, and grounds superintendent Randy Turner. Before designing WCU's trail, members of this group visited several fitness jogging trails across the state, including ones built by Western Piedmont Community College, Winston-Salem's recreation department. Wake Forest University and Duke University. The start of WCU's fitness jogging trail is marked by a sign bearing a map of the trail. The trail begins by circling WCU's softball field and continues north past a power substation, around the golf practice range and across a footbridge over Cullowhc Creek. On the other side of the creek, the trail circles a grass field and then stretches south on a path parallel to Highway 107 until it crosses a second bridge and heads east toward Scott Hall. The trail continues past the track and along University Drive until it turns left into the driveway behind the gym. The trail ends at the starting point. Cost of constructing the new trail was about $16,200 and was financed in part by student recreation funds. For more information about the inaugural run, WCU students may stop by office 14 or 15 in Reid Gymnasium.
