  • Social Work Club The Student Advisory Committee and the Social Work Club will be sponsoring a cookout on Thursday September 18 for any sincere interested freshman that is taking Introduction to Social Work or plans to. The Student Advisory Committee for Social Work will be meeting Sept. 23, 1980 in McKee, Room 123. AWelcome To... Brother Alfred Behm has been assigned to Western Carolina University as the Catholic campus chaplain by the Glenmary Home Missioners. He is a recent graduate of the university of California at San Francisco where he obtained a bachelor's degree in psychological service and a master's degree in religious education. In addition to filling misssion assignments in Georgia and Kentucky, he has also spent several years as a vocation counselor. Brother Al annnounces plans for an Open House at the Catholic Student Center to be held on September 14. All Catholic students and faculty are invited to attend. It will begin following the evening Mass on Sunday. He also announces the new Mass schedule as follows: Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 12:05 pm Sunday - 9:45 am and 7:00 pm In addition, Brother AI's office hours at the Catholic Student Center will be weekday afternoons from 2:00 to 5:00 and on week-nights from 8:00 to 10:30. Square Dance The annual Mountain Heritage square dance will be held Friday, Sept. 19. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center at Western Carolina University from 8 until 11 p.m. Callers for the free hoe-down will be Ren Bannerman and James Cantrell. Cantrell, a native of Manchester, Virginia, who attended WCU's Elderhostel program this past summer, calls in a traditional manner. The Stoney Creek Boys of Asheville will provide the music. Members of the band include Clyde Cable, fiddle; George Banks, banjo; Boyd Black, bass; and Leonard Hollifield, guitar. The square dance is open to anyone ready to shake-a-leg. McLains To Perform The internationally known McLain Family Band will perform tonight in the recital hall of the Music-English Building as WCU's 1980 Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions (LCE) season gets under way. The bluegrass band--a father, two daughters, two sons, and a daughter-in-law have traveled and performed in 61 countries and 43 states. The band has been featured with symphony orchestras on 48 occasions, has appeared at the Kennedy Center six times, and frequently plays on the Grand Ole Opry. Members of the energetic and exuberant group are Raymond K. McLain, 51; Raymond W., 26, and his wife Beverly, 26; Ruth, 21; Nancy Ann, 15; and Michael, 12. Throughout the year WCU's LCE Series offers quality entertainment in the visual and chamber arts along with contemporary speakers. An exhibit of Nigerian Textiles is currently on display in the gallery of WCU's Belk Building under the co-sponsorship of LCE. Other events on the LCE calendar include an exhibit of North Carolina glass (Oct. 12 - Nov. 5); the North Carolina Dance Theatre (Oct. 2); the North Carolina School of the Arts Orchestra (Oct. 28); the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (Nov. 3); the Early Music Consort (Nov. 20); Carl Gerbrant (Jan. 20); Bella Abzug (Jan. 22); Paul Jenkins' paintings (Feb. 9 - March 4); University of Georgia String Quartet (Feb. 19); Toshiko Takaezu paintings, fibers and clay (March 9 - April 1); Alliance Theatre (March 2); Marvin Blickenstaff (March 10); and the Tucson Boys Chorus (March 25). Subscription tickets for all LCE activities are available from Doug Davis. Room 460 of WCU's University Administration-Mountain Heritage Center Building. Subscription tickets are $20 for adults, $35 for couples, $15 for student spouses, and $10 for children age 6-18. WCU students are admitted for $1 for advance tickets and $2 at the door.
