  • Ground water and hearing disorders linked by Monica Henson Staff Writer A survey currently being conducted in Jackson, Haywood, and Macon^ Counties by members of the W.C.U. Speech and He'aring Development Department has revealed the possible presence of bacteria in area ground water which may cause significant hearing disorders in young children. Mr. Roger A. Cook, audiologist, and Mr. Robert W. Teel, Jr., a speech pathologist, discovered a disturbingly high incidence of hearing disorders in children of this area between the ages of 3 and 6 years, during a study of speech and hearing development. Cook and Teel noted 'that the occurence of hearing disorders in young children in this area was much higher than the national average, and Teel, along with other members of the Speech and Hearing Development Department, decided to investigate this high disorder rate. How was the disorder rate linked to possible bacterial contamination of ground water? According to Teel, a search was launched to determine a common factor which would disclose some sort of relation between the affected children and their hearing dieturbandes. It was already known that each child had experienced some degree of internal ear infection, and during the course of questioning and study, it was ascertained that each child drank well water. After establishing this fact, Teel conducted a literature review in order to determine whether or not a similar case had been studied and recorded. The review was fruitless, and Teel contacted the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and inquired as to whether or not any other such study had been carried out. T. Forecast WCU by 6 the EPA informed him that a study had indeed been carried out in the Soviet Union in 1962, determining that hearing disorders in young children in a certain section were caused by nitrates, which were reaced to the children's drinking water. Mr. Teel remarked, "A lot of studies have been done showing hearing losses from swimming. What we're looking at is internal ear infections." According to Mr. Teel, the possibility of some substance present in drinking water contributing to and or causing hearing disorders is much greater in young children than in adults. Teel explained that in young children, the throat and the Eustachian tube are almost paralleljtherefore the chance of some substances in the throat reaching the tube. Having developed a theory, Teel and some volunteers from the Speech and Hearing Development Center, in conjunction with the EPA, began a study in 1979 of ground water in the Cullowhee area. Teel and his co-workers conducted telephone interviews and talked with families while the EPA tested samples of ground water from area wells. The first set of samples revealed an abnormally high bacterial plate count, or number of bacteria which can be cultured on a glass plate. However, in the next test the samples proved to be sterile, completely devoid of any bacteria whatsoever. Teel stated, "They claimed that the samples got stuck in an x-ray; at any rate, the samples were sterile, which is impossible because ground water always contains a certain amount of bacteria." Contrary to rumor in the area, the contamination is not caused by any area factories or industries, according to Teel. Conjectures have been made, ranging from poorly installed septic tanks to the location of cattle pastures near wells. Any number of reasons could explain the contamination. Teel and his group are now involved with Mountain Projects, and expanded the study to include Jackson, Haywood, and Mason Counties. They hope to screen all day-care children, and eventually evolve a solution to the contamination problem.
