  • Page 18 /THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Mav I, 1980 Brevard HS catches WCU math prize Despite a strong challenge from Waynesville's Tuscola High School, Brevard High School's young mathematicians held on Thursday to capture first place for the eighth consecutive year in the 10th annual WCU High School Mathematics Contest. The Brevard group bettered 33 other high shcools in the senior division to retain the math title. Mrs. Kathryn Bohan is faculty sponsor for Brevard. Tuscola High, sponsored by John Goebel and James Barnwell, finished second, and Asheville High was third. Waynesville Junior High finished first among the 12 schools entered in the junior high division and Hendersonville's Rugby Junior High was second although a scoring error by the judges listed Rugby as the first place finisher at the awards ceremonies. Some 550 math students entered the competition sponsored by the WCU department of mathematics and directed by Ralph H. Willis. Seven students advanced to the state contest to be held May 22 at Research Triangle Park in Raleigh. They were, in order of finish, in the Comprehensive division: Robert N. Unger, Brevard High; Lawrence C. Davis, Tuscola High; David M. Taylor, Brevard; Michael M. Loomis, Pisgah High; Joseph McElroy, Tuscola; Jim Grone, Hendersonville High; and Edward Greene, Asheville High. Honorable mention in the Comprehensive division included Robert D. Turk of Asheville High; Jim Wallace, Brevard High; Page H. Ives, Brevard; Kenneth M. Kirkpatrick, Tuscola; Fori C. Daniel, Asheville; Sheila M. Fortune, Brevard; and Lee R. King, Tuscola. Five students, Loomis, Walter Louis Baker of Erwin High, Mark Bryan Rogers, Janet L. Price and Steven Crisp, all of Robbinsville, were offered $400 scholarships to attend WCU next fall. Receiving certificates of merit in the other three subject divisions were: Geometry—first place, Jassim Al-Saadi, Swain High; second, Beverly Anderson, Enka High; third, Holly J. Holzinger, West Henderson High; fourth (tie), Jeffrey Cole Rhodes, Brevard and Tom B. Glesne, Brevard; fifth, Marcum P. Bell of Asheville High. Honorable mention, Gregory H. Wilde, Brevard; Earnest Murray, Crest High; Mark Pressley, West Henderson High; John Kimberling, West Henderson; Gregg Barker, Swain High; Donald Puckett, Erwin High; and Doublas Ellis, Asheville High. Other top five finishers in the junior high school competition were, other that first place Waynesville Junior sponsored by Mrs. Sheila Brookshire and second place Rugby sponsored by Mrs. Mary Corn, third place Shelby Junior High, fourth place Valley Springs School of Skyland, and fifth place Crest Junior High of Shelby.
