Page 4 /THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/May 1, 1980 Carolinian newsbriefs Spring conference WCU will host a spring conference on early childhood education May 1 and 2 with Dr. Sarah Lou Leeper, a nationally known consultant in early childhood education and author of the textbook "Good Schools for Young Children," scheduled to present several lectures and the keynote address. The conference, to be held in WCU's Hinds University Center, will begin Thursday, May 1, at 8:45 a.m. with a general session and includes workshops, informal talk sessions with students, teachers and others, a teacher-made materials exhibit and the keynote luncheon address by Dr. Leeper for conference participants and the general public. Dr. Leeper's luncheon topic in the East Wing of Brown Cafeteria will be on the "Dynamics of the Young Child's World" at 12:30 p.m. The second-day activities include guest lectures by Dr. Leeper to WCU child development classes and elementary education student teachers. The conference is sponsored by the WCU department of elementary education and reading in conjunction with the university's Visiting Scholars Program. Further information may be obtained by contacting the department of elementary education and reading at 227-7108. Poetry competition! A $1000 grand prize will be awarded in the Sixth Annual Poetry Competition sponsored by the World of Poetry, a quarterly newsletter for poets. Poems of all styles and on any subject are eligible to compete for the grand prize or for 49 other cash or merchandise awards. Says Poetry Editor Eddie-Lou Cole, "We are encouraging poetic talent of every kind, and expect our contest to produce exciting discoveries—like Virginia Bates, a housewife from Woodbine, Maryland. She won our grand prize last year with her poem "Pieta," about her son in Vietnam.'' Rules and official entry forms are available from World of Poetry, 2431 Stockton, Dept. N, Sacramento, California 95817. Tennis with June Tennis anyone? The division of continuing education at WCU will offer tennis classes May 12-30 for beginning and intermediate adults. The classes will be taught by June Benson, a member of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation faculty and experienced tennis coach at the WCU courts adjacent to Reid Gymnasium. The beginners class will meet from 9 until 9:50 a.m. and the intermediate class will meet from 10 until 10:50 a.m. daily. You must furnish your own racquet; tennis balls will be provided. Admission is open to anyone, but enrollment will be limited. Cost will be $30 per course. To register, contact the WCU division of continuing education, telephone 227-7397. Research awards Two WCU juniors, Terry William Guillion and James E. King III, have been selected to participate in the National Science Foundation's Undergraduate Research Participation Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this summer. Only six students were selected statewide to participate in the program, which provides undergraduates the opportunity to work for 10 weeks, between May 19 and Aug. 22, in faculty-directed research activities in science and engineering fields. Students are provided a $100 per week NSF stipend while involved in the program. Both Gullion and King are physics majors at WCU. Gullion, son of Joyce B. Ferrell and William K. Guillion of Mooresville, is a 1976 graduate of Mooresville Senior High School. He is a dean's list student and received the freshman high achievement award in chemistry in 1978. He is a student Marshal and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, the Society of Physics Students and Western Carolina Astronomical Society. King is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. King Jr. of Rt. 10 in Franklin, and is a 1977 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas School. Also a dean's list student. King is a member of the Society of Physics Students and Western Carolina Astronomical Society and serves as vice president of the chess club. CAP training It's Spring training time for members of the Civil Air Patrol. Members of the Jackson County Composite Squadron will join other members, from around the state, in a statewide search and rescue training session, Saturday. Headquarters will be located at Winkler Airport in Hendersonville. However, the personnel from Jackson County, along with members from the Swain County Squadron, will be stationed at Jackson County Airport. During this training exercise, Civil Air Patrol members will receive instruction and practice in air and ground search techniques, interrogation, and communications. This practice is one of many training sessions in which Civil Air Patrol members take part annually to prepare themselves for actual emergencies. Saturday's training comes less than a week after members of the Jackson and Swain County Squadrons participated in a recovery effort at an actual crash site. Senior members Cliff Andrews and David White— along with Cadets Bobby Stephens, Mark Thurman, Bill Bishop, James Hornsby, Andy Hornsby, Steve Howell, and Larry Elders—stopd guard, Sunday night, around a wreckage which was discovered Sunday afternoon near the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Balsam. Spring in England Henry VIII, prominent 16th century political leader, is just one of the fascinating personalities students on the 1981 Spring in England program will encounter. Interested students are invited to an informational meeting on Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m. in Belk 104 to meet the faculty and to find out more about the program. As courses will be offered in response to student interests, students who plan to take part or who think they might be interested are especially encouraged to attend.
