  • SPORTS SECTION THE CRYING TOWEl Woody Needham, Sports Editor Cullowhee: Coach Jim Gudger and his basketball team open the season tomorrow night against Piedmont College of Georgia, in the first of a 27 game schedule. The Catamounts will see action in at least three tournaments this year. The freshman team, under the tutelage of Coach Jock Martin, will play a 17 game slate. Last year the Catamounts copped about every championship available. This year, however, they will have a difficult time defending the North State Conference crown. The '59-60 team is lacking in height, experience and perhaps depth and speed. Due to graduation losses in all those departments, Gudger is having to rebuild this year. Dave Elmore and Dave Jones form the nucleus of a promising but thoroughly untried crew and it will probably be mid-January before anyone can say anything definite about the Catamounts—other than what Gudger said himself, "The only thing I'll promise is that we'll show up for every game, and we'd better have plenty of good effort." Elmore and Jones are two of the most highly touted basketeers in the North State this year. But it'll take some stand-out performances by freshmen and returning veterans like Eddie Rudeen, Jackie Teague and Bucky Pryor to give WCC the quality of team it had last year. Rudeen, Teague and Pryor have proven themselves strong and consistent court men. Their scoring potential will have to be realized however. Gaston Seal, new Indiana import, may be the surprise of the year. I'll be surprised if he isn't. There are three outstanding freshmen, Mel Gibson, Charlie Crawford and Pad Padgett, who may give the Catamounts a winner. I'll risk a wild prediction of a 18-10 season, figuring that both Jones and Elmore are worth four games apiece, Seal and Pryor two, Teague and Rudeen two, the freshmen one and Gudger's coaching five. Holiday Tournament And Admission Charge I'd like to bring your special attention to the Holiday Tournament and the admission charges to the games. The tournament is the result of Coach Jim Gudger. Each year Western Carolina basketball teams are invited to play in one or more of the various tournaments held in the South during the Christmas vacation. The importance of tournament play is to give experience to young college basketball players, the lack of which might be hurtful in conference games. Gudger felt this experience could be gained just as easily at home—as well as some intersectional recognition being gained by the sponsoring college. However welcome this "added attraction" is to Catamount fans it nonetheless costs money—money which is not included in the budget. The only solution, the only way the Holiday Tournament can be held is to have admission charges. Last year numerous students quipped bitter remarks about being charged fifty cents to see two games each night of the tournament. These charges are explained on the opposite page in the story about the Holiday Tournament. I hope this column will enlighten those students still holding doubts. I make an earnest appeal to the whole student body to attend at least one night. "Thanks" Thanks to the whole football squad for a damn good season. "Next Year" finally arrived! The Catamounts' six All-Conference gridironers were selected by "The Greensboro Daily News," which is officially recognized as the North State All-Conference selector. "The Winston-Salem Journal" selected an All-State team. WCC had three nominees for it. When he played for the Catamounts, he was recognized as one of the greatest linemen ever to perform here. Co-captain Bob Cooper, All- State and All-Conference selection, ran 1,156 yards this season. He is one of three players in the state to go over 1,000 yards. He is the only active player in the North Sate Conference to go over 1,000 yards for two consecutive years. Cooper, a senior at WCC, played quarterback for the Catamounts. Denny Williams from Belmont was selected for the All-State and All-Conference teams. He is one of the most feared and respected linemen ever to play at WCC. Williams was an All-American nominee as a freshman and is a poten- -.-aV Tom Broadwater tial professional football nominee. Halfback Tom Broadwater, from Fairless Hills, Pa., was nominated for both the All-State and All- Conference teams. The WCC junior is ranked as one of the top 10 pass receivers in small colleges throughout the nation by NAIA. During the season he rushed for 403 yards and received 23 passes. Cecil Smith, a native of Elberton, Ga., is one of WCC's All-Conference contributions. He is one of the fastest guards in Western Carolina's football history. Smith is also a fine tackier. Co-captain Dean Turner has developed this year into one of the best ends in the North State Conference. He received 15 passes and scored 6 points this season. Turner, a senior this year, hails from All-Conference Team Western Carolina College's six nominees to the All-North State Conference squad was more than any other school placed. The mythical football team is officially recognized as the selections made by The Greensboro Daily News. Lenoir Rhyne had five members from their championship team selected. Jack Spady, a junior from Gastonia, is one of WCC's repeaters from last year's All - Conference team. The other one is Bob Cooper. Spady was handicapped by an early season arm injury but recovered to finish the season as a leading end. Part of the credit for the Catamounts' success this season is due to their coaching. Head mentor Dan Robinson coached the back- field. Tom Young coached end, and Bob Setzer coached line. Each sent two men to the All-Conference team. Mack Bowman, student assistant, completes the Cat coaching list. Dean Turner Jack Spady PICTURED ABOVE ARE MEMBERS OF THE PFEIFFER COL- lege basketball team which will see action here in Cullowhee during the Holiday tournament.
