McDaniH Editor-in-Chief Business Manager Managing Editor Associate Editor News Editor Sports Editor Columnist An Editor Photo Editor Founded 1927 We here at the Western Carolinian would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Sam Beck down at the WCU Print Shop for pulling us out of our frying pan Wednesday night, and to Dr. Stilllon and Dr. Stolz for making it possible. Get out and vote Dear Editor, After serving this past year as Dorm Senator for Buchanan, I would like to review the accomplishments and problems of the SGA this past year, and purpose some new goals. In the past SGA has not fully published each resolution brought before the Senate. Perhaps, under the newly elected administration, this situation will change. As a Senator, I woul like to see that positive steps be taken to bring about a difference. During the present administration, which is headed by SGA President Roger McKinney and Vice-President Richard Sullins, a resolution I would like to make requiring all future resolutions affecting dorm residents to be posted. Students will be able to read about each proposal which comes before the Senate floor affects them. Specific bills which I feel have brought about benefits for students as a whole are from the Executive office One such resolution requested monthly inspection of university motor pool vehicles. Students of clubs and organizations, faculty, and administrators depend on the safety of these vehicles. Another bill which was voted against was the faculty senate's report and recommendations on General Education Requirements. Some of the reasons for its failure to pass were the possibility that credits may or may not transfer from one university to another. Also, while it provides a broad overview there is not enough time in the semester to cover the subject matter. I introduced a resolution to put phones in Dodson and Brown cafeterias. As a candidate for the post of Senator-at-Large, I would like to see SGA become more of a service to the students. For student Government to be more accessible and useful to the students. I think each senator should make him or herself more available to the students on a one-to-one basis. In any case, for a government to be representative, a greater percentage of the student body must cast their votes. Your support will be greatly appreciated in the upcoming election. The elections will take place at the University Center, Tuesday, April 15. Sincerely yours, Lisa Womack and Supporters Mailman still does lousy job Dear Editor, I am writing in regard to the poor mail service we arc receiving here at Reynolds. I read in the paper a while back a letter similar to this, but it didn't seem to do much good. I don't know if its the post office or Reynolds' mailman's fault, but its getting ridiculous. A month and a half ago my parents sent me some money to get a prescription filled and I'm still waiting on the money. When I asked the mailman about it, he told me that some of the mail gets delayed going through housing. I personally don't understand what right housing has to f— with my mail. Next year I plan to get a post office box. maybe then my mail will get here on time or at least get here. When I was home at Spring Break, I found that a good friend of mine had gotten married and was mad that I didn't come to the wedding. He had sent me an invitation, but I guess it's in limbo somewhere. Signed, Truly pissed Jeff Jensen Cecil's crew is slack! Dear Editor, Those people who were fortunate enough to go home over Easter break should count their blessings. They didn't have to deal with good of Cecil like the rest of us did. My roommate and I went to dinner at 4:30. which is usually the time that Dodson opens on weekends. We got there and discovered all the people who were also stuck here at WCU sitting around waiting for the line to open. I surveyed the scene and saw the Dodson employees enjoying (?) a nice, hot meal. When, after five more minutes, the line had still not opened, we all went down it anyway. By this time everybody was pretty mad (not to mention hungry) and began to complain about the situation. One of Cecil's cohorts then informed us that a sign telling the cafeteria's holiday hours. 5-5:30 p.m., had been posted on the bulletin board since Wednesday, i 11" sign was the si/c of a large index card, no more.) Well, that was all fine and dandy, but meanwhile the food had been sitting out since 4:30. maybe even before, and still had twenty minutes more to go. Who wants to cat cold food, especially Cecil's cold food? Yuck! (Keep in mind that the employees got it while it was hot.) I don't think all the trouble's worth $290 myself. Sincerely, Leanne Upchurch WCU wastes energy Dear Editor. One would tend to believe that, in the midst of our country's gravely worsening energy crisis, her people might do their best to conserve what energy we have left, no matter their own beliefs to the solution of the energy problem. Why, then, do I find at least two (if not more) buildings on the WCU campus with their air-conditioning units already churned as if it were July? I should think that the university could prove to be a better example to the rest of the country than that. Maybe in July guys, but not now, huh? Sincerely, M. Huddell Register before it's too late Dear Editor, I and four of my colleagues researched voter registration among youth. Our research consisted of information gathering and a subsequent field study. Two facts from the Census Bureau underlined the inquiry. 1.) Percentage-wise, youth registers less compared to other age groups. 2.) Percentage-wise, of those registered, youth votes less compared toother age groups. In talking with students, 1 found the tour main reasons for non-participation are (1) don't have time. (2) lack of good candidates. (3) unimportance of their vote, and (4) don't know how to register. These are not good reasons, di Registering and voting take very little time, and are very important in determining a responsive government. (2) This year, at least, there is one good candidate-John Anderson. His credentials are impressive. His stands on the issues are intelligent and forthright. His optimistic attitude toward youth is refreshing. (3) Individual votes are important, as this is the way your viewpoint is "tallied up" with other viewpoints, alike ami different, to form a consensus in electing officials. As shown above, youth is very under-represented. In this respect your vote is even more important since it helps to correct the situation. (4) Registering to vote is easy. It takes just a few minutes. Call the County Board of Elections to find out where to register. To vote for John Anderson in the May 6th primary, you must register Republican by April 8th. As the beneficiaries of this country's future, let's resolve now to become more visible in the election process. Sincerely, Mark Reynolds Dodd Senior - UNC-CH
