  • Page 16/ THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/April 3,19«0 Lady Cats sign Swain County star Anna Marie Wike. the all-time leading women's basketball scorer at Swain County High School with over 1,700 points has signed an athletic grant in aid to attend Western Carolina University next fall, it was announced Wednesday. Wike, who plans to play both women's volleyball and basketball at WCU averaged 26.8 points per game for Swain County in twenty games last season, and scored 1.760 points and pulled down 10.0 rebounds per game in her four years of plas. She was a three time selection to the Smokey Mountain All-Conference team (1977 through 1980) and was the Conference Player of the Vear for the- 1979-80 season. Wike was also named the Western North Carolina Female Athlete of the Year for. 1-A, 2-A schools in '78-'79. While earning All-western North 'Carolina honors last season, she was honored by her lea in as the women's basketball MVP and team captain. During the summer of 1979 Anna earned honors as the Outstanding Camper at the North Carolina State University women's basketball camp, and the MVP at Western Carolina University's women's basketball camp. In volleyball, Wike was a tin Ml Confen selection and Swain's team MVP in both the 1978 and 1979 season. Added to her long list of athletic achievements is her selection to the Smokes Mountain Cat Classic Kast Carolina University held off a spirited and upset-minded Western Carolina team to claim the championship in the first annual Catamount Classic women's collegiate softball tournament played in Cullow hee Saturday, March 29. The Lady Pirates defeated the lady Cats 4-2 in the championship game of the double elimination tournament, but only after a stiff challenge from Western Carolina. After losing their first game of the day at 9:30 a.m. (a 12-11 loss to Campbell) the Lady Cats rebounded to win four games in a row, including a thrilling 1-0 squeaker over ECU to advance into the final game. Western was led by the all-around play of Kerry Cooke, afterward named the tourney's Most Valuable Player, and solid offensive and defensive play from the entire squad, now 9-5 overall after this weekend's action. Western's coach had nothing but good things to say about the tournament, sponsored by the Jackson County Recreation Department. "We had a first rate tournament event though the rain washed out Friday's play. The Rec department did a super job throughout, and I thought our team played good ball." At 5'7" and 140 pounds, Wike played the guard and wing positions in basketball, and while al Swain High compiled a 3.5 overall scholastic average. She plans to major in Health and Physical Education al Western. Western Carolina women's voiles ball and basketball coach Judy Murray likes her overall athletic ability. "It will be a pleasure to have a student-athlete of Anna's quality at WCU. Her specialn in volleyball is hitting and defense, while in basketball she has the quickness and ability to penetrate to the basket. Anna amazes UK with her talent for shooting the basketball with a lot of pressure on her and in heavy traffic. She'll definitely be an asset to our women's program at Western," coach Murray says. Anna's coach at Swain, Pat Colville, says of her: "Anna is dedicated and self-disciplined and exhibits the qualities of a top athlete in her being coachable, co-operative, and an exceptional team player." She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wike of Cherokee, North Carolina. Wike is the second multi-sport women's athlete to sign with Western Carolina in the last ten days, with Tuscola High's Judy Green signing last week.
