N.C, author and Asheville Citizen-Times newspaperman and columnist, Friday was named the winner of the 1980 Laurel Leaf Award of the Appalachian Consortium for "meritorious contributions''' to Southern Appalachia and its people. Parris was the only recipient of the 1980 award. He was unanimously nominated for the distinction by an awards committee headed by Dr. J. Gerald Eller of Cullowhee. Parris' name was entered in the Laurel Leaf Award list by Dr. H. F. Robinson, Chancellor of WCU, a member of the three-state consortium organization. Robinson, in recommending Parris for the award, said the "33 years that John Parris has devoted to writing in his beloved Western North Carolina is rarely matched among present-day authors." Parris, a Sylva native, from his teens was a United Press wire service reporter and editor. World War II war correspondent, and an Associated Press diplomatic correspondent in London and New York. In 1947, he returned to Sylva and began writing a column, "Roaming the Mountains." for the Citizen-Times. Countless columns and five books later, Parris is the best-known writer on Western North Carolina folklore and customs. Robinson said that "not only through his writings but through his service to many organizations, John Parris has demonstrated his love for his people and the region where he lives." Western's own Mountain Heritage Center, Robinson said, is an example, and Parris "should receive much credit for the idea and its implementation." Another well-known Southern Appalachian authority. Dr. Cratis Williams of Appalachian State University, supported the nomination by writing "John Parris has done an outstanding job in interpreting our region to our own people and raising our awareness of and pride in both our traditions and ourselves." They said his columns and books "have increased the sense of heritage among his own people and broadened the understanding of the region by all people." They told Parris his achievements and accomplishments "are the essence of the criteria for the award." And they said he is "rightly called the Master Chronicler of the Mountains. Presentation of the award on behalf of the consortium was made by Dr. Aaron Hyatt, representing the nominating institution. The Appalachian Consortium includes educational institutions, state and federal agencies, and individuals from North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia concerned with the life and culture of the Southern Appalachian region.,The consortium met here at East Tennessee State University in association with the third annual Appalachian Studies Conference co-sponsored by the consortium and ETSU. Action by the student senate on the policy statement against the GE changes is expected within the next weeks prior to the presentation of the finalized recommendations to the faculty senate by its academic affairs committee. In preparations for the up-coming campus elections, the student senate approved the membership of the 1980 elections commission. Also, the senate increased the amount of money candidates can spend per student on their campaigns. The elections commission will brief candidates on the campaign spending changes at a meeting in the near future. Mark James was sworn in as a senator, and the senate heard and approved the resignation of Neil Phillips.
