  • JANUARY31. IWO fill WESTERN CAROLINIAN/ P«ge7 Design dept. hosts art exhibit By Russ Randolph Staff Writer Two hundred display pieces from some of the top designers in the world will be featured in the Belk Art Gallery beginning Monday, as the 58th Annual Exhibit of the New York Art Director's Club comes to Western Carolina for the first time ever. A reception will be held Monday, February 4, at 7 p.m. to unveil the show in the gallery, and afterwards a film presentation will be given on the best television commercials of 1979. The New York Art Director's Club exhibit is a traveling show and the 200 best design pieces selected from some 11,000 entries from across the world are featured. Postors, catalogs, record album covers, type design, and illustrations are just a few of the items that will be on display. Among some of the famous designers featured will be Milton Glazer, Jim Adair, James McMullian, and Herb Lubalin. This is only the second year that Western has had a design department. Headed by Wade Hobgood, the department now has over 70 majors who may receive their BFA degree in one or all the offered concentrations-photography, illustration, or graphic design. "I think this will not only benefit the students in design, it will also benefit students in radio and television, theater, or any other visually oriented field," says Hobgood. At this point, every student of Hobgood's already graduated, has a job in their profession. Hobgood, who is only in his second year as professor of design here, comes to Cullowhee from Arkansas State University, where he was also head of the design program. He has done such work as album cover design for ABC Records, various printed design for Print Magazine, and other noted credits. Many of his former students have also been given national attention for their design ideas. There are now 15 courses offered to students interested in design work, and among some of the more popular courses in the past year have been photography and lettering, with more than 70 students enrolling in the past year. One-third of those were non-art or design majors. All classes are set up as if they were professional jobs, therefore students are able to get on-the-job training with the supervision of Hobgood, who often assigns actual jobs for campus publications or for area merchants. An internship is also offered through the art department and is receiving good response by the design majors. Due to the increase of design students over the past year, there is now a design club called "DASL," which stands for Designers of the Art Student's League. The members of the club are available for employment by individuals or publications in the area for their various design needs. They can be hired by phone by calling the Art Department at 227-7210. The cost to hire them is about one-third the amount it would cost to hire a professional. Among some of the recent work done by members of the "DASL" club is the designing of the Mountain Heritage Day t-shirts, the "Drank till I Dropped" t-shirts, the Last Minute Production's Logo, the "Country Run" t-shirts, and the huge Atlanta Rhythm Section billboard you saw hanging from the University Center during the week of the ARS concert. The club is advised by Hobgood and now has a membership of 50. Hobgood says that the new addition of a design program here at Western will definitely bring more students and attention to the university. "I think the design program here is producing students who are equal or above any other design students at any other university. We have all new equipment and good facilities, which I think are as good as any other universitv." Jim McMullan, well-known professional illustrator agreed with Hobgood when he visited the new department last spring. "The program at Western Carolina is up to the level of any university 1 have ever visited with the exception of two, who rank as the top two design schools in the country." This has also been the opinion of many other professional people who are hiring graduates in the design field, a field which is very demanding at the present time, and will be for the years to come. The average salary of a recent design graduate averages $14,000 a year starting off. With experience, some designers are paid as much as $100,000 yearly. If you are interested in getting into a design course here at Western and would like further information on just what is offered, contact Wade Hobgood at the art department between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. If you're like most who visit the department, you'll be quite impressed.
