  • Page 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/January 17, 1980 Gold, silver, brass, on display Jewelry exhibit offers N.C's finest By Russ Randolph Staff Writer Jewelry made by some of the top creative jewelry artists in North Carolina can be seen this month in the Belk Art Gallery as the WCU Art Department and LCE Committee sponsor the North Carolina Invitational Jewelry Show January 12 through 30. The show features 56 display pieces made by some of the top teachers and professional manufacturers of creative jewelry across North Carolina who have been invited to the show on basis of reputation and credibility as artists. All items in the show have been hand crafted. The show got underway with a reception on Sunday, January 13. Here, many of the artists who have work on display were on hand to unveil the display which has been arranged by Mr. Duane Oliver, assistant director of the Belk Art Gallery. Eight glass view cases house over fifty jewelry and metal work pieces made from gold, silver, brass, and many other precious metals. Among some of the artists featured is Western Carolina's own Ted Matus, the associate professor ot jewelry in the WCU Art Department. Matus has such objects as a sterling silver salad service, a silver ladle, gold wedding bands, and a blue sapphire ring on display in the exhibit. "This is one of the biggest jewelry exhibits we've ever had here in our gallery and I'm proud to be a part of it," said Matus, who is in his eighteenth year in the WCU Art Department. "This is an excellent example of the superb craftsmanship found in North Carolina concerning jewelry," he added, "I encourage everyone to come and see this beautiful display." Many of the items on display are available for purchase by the faculty and student viewers. Handmade bracelets, pendants, earrings, and knives are among some of the items for sale. For all you jewelry lovers who are interested in making your own jewelry, a class is offered by the art department where students are taught by Matus to design and make their own jewelry. Also, many items made by the jewelry students can be purchased throughout the year at annual student shows.
