During the encampment, the CAP members spent a busy time learning mountain climbing and back packing techniques, map reading, compass reading, and use of electronic locating equipment; things which will aid CAP members in their searches for missing aircraft and persons. Members attending from the tri-county area are members of the Jackson County Composite Squadron, commanded by Captain Dallas Stephens. This encampment was one of three training excercises this month designed to increase the skills of Civil Air Partol members. On Saturday, October 6th, members took part in a search and rescue practice mission. They recovered an emergency locater transmitter and a large, orange parachute. Saturday, October 20th, CAP members will participate in a statewide civil preparedness excercise. Headquarters will be in Raleigh with each individual unit operating from its home base. The Jackson County unit will operate out of the Jackson County Airport. Civil Air Patrol is a worldwide, nonprofit organization whose members are all volunteers. It also is the civilian auxiliary of the U. S. Air Force. Best known for its air search and rescue and other emergency missions, Civil Air Patrol also conducts aerospace education and youth motivation programs, such as the recent encampment. CAP was established in 1941 and won fame during World War II for its civilian defense missions. It now has units in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Germany, England, Japan, the Philippines, and Guam. The Jackson County Squadron meets Sundays at 7 p.m. at the Jackson County Airport. The public invited to attend.
