The Cats used a big three run homer by outfielder Freddie Brown in the second inning of the first game to propel them to the win. WCU starting pitcher, freshman Jeff Mashburn got credit for his first win against no losses and needed sixth inning relief help from Randy Bowman. The Carson-Newman ace, Charles Vesser was credited with the loss dropping his record to 3-2. The Cats nearly won the second game, coming back from a 2-1 defecit to score three runs in the fifth on a Billy Boyd double, a Freddie Brown triple and a single by Mark Reeser. With two out in the top of the seventh, Western ahead 4-3, Eagle designation hitter Tom Hodge doubled off WCU starter Randy Sims. Then third baseman Don McFarland lined a pitch out of the ballpark in left field for a two run homer to give the Eagles the lead and win. The Cats threatened in the bottom of the seventh, with Gerald Harp on third and Willie Carpenter on second with two out. DH Johnny Kay then grounded out to end the game. Sims was the loser for WCU with his record dropping to 1-5. Greg Adams was the winning pitcher for Carson-Newman with reliever Schaffer Smith getting the save. The split left WCU with an 11-11 record, Carson-Newman.16-7. The next Catamount action is today at 3 p.m. at Childress field with Western taking on Mars Hill College. .From Page 6 "1 know there is good talent on band instruments on campus. 1 wish we could get more of them into the program. We are having fun, and doing our best. It's a healthy situation. "My goal is excellence in everything—pep, marching, and concert bands—and if 1 could just tap the potential of the nearby area, we, at WCU could have a rapidly improving and progressive band program." If his second year is an progressive as his first, Dr. Scagnoli could well be on the way to great success with the bands at Western. This season they've gone a long way on very little, and have become a major asset to the WCU athletic program. In time, just like sports teams with a lot of hard work, they can compete with anyone. Letters: Give me a break Dear Editor, I want to remind the four "Neo-black" girls who broke in line in from of about 30 people at the SIjA voting booths Tuesday that lines always form to the rear. I'd also like to remind the people who let them i" line of this. Don't invite these adverse feelings ami you won't get them. Sun-, most people are guilty of this once in a while, hut when you KNOW it is getting on others nerves, it takes a lot of gall and rudeness to persist. What the hell makes you think you are so privileged anyway? You aren't, and. 1 got a bad impression of "Neo-blacks." That ruined my day, but then, you wouldn't know, would you? You never have other people stepping in front of you because you're always doing it, right? I hope this letter makes your day! Cheryl Hill P.S. It seems like after just one day of registering for classes, you'd get the idea. THE STROH BREWERY COMPANY, DETROIT, MICHIGAN © 1»7t "Okay, who's the wise guy?' For the real beer lover.
