  • The^ster n Carolinian The Voice of the Students 20 PAGES THURSDAY Mar. 29,1979 Vol.XLIVNo.26 CULLOWHEE, N.C. Brrrl This determined tuber looks as if he passed the point of no return - about a mile before this picture was taken. He was a part of the fearless group who braved a sunless day and the frigid waters of the Tuckaseegec to compete in the Annual WCU Tubing Race this past Saturday. According to competitors, it's not half as bad as It looks; once you've been in the water for ten minutes, you can't feel anything. Filing draws to an end; stage set for power plays By DOUG BEAM Staff Writer The stage is being set. There are only 24 hours left until the spring political power plays open as the 5 p.m. Friday filing deadline rapidly approaches. Twelve students have entered five races in filing activity this week. They are as follows by office filed for: David Lee Cashwell and Keith David Tidwell, Student Government Association (SGA) president; William Kenneth Roberts, University Center Board (UCB) vice president; Fred Michael Wix, WWCU general manager; Vincent M. Gentry, editor of the "Catamount;" Bonnie Sue Blalock and Stephany Ann Criss, at-large senator; and Scott Craig, Robert Scott Furr, Donald Luther Hollingsworth, Timothy M. McBride, and Richard Aden Wagoner Jr., commuter senator. No one has filed for the position of business manager of the "Catamount" yearbook. Only five candidates have filed for the eight seats open for commuter senators. To be eligible to run, a candidate must be a regularly enrolled student and have a quality point ratio of 2.00 or higher. Candidates for editor of "The Western Carolinian" must also have at least six months of on-the-job experience. Students interested in seeking office have until 5 p.m. tomorrow to complete and turn in a filing notice to the SGA office, located on the second floor University Center. The SGA office is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays. The ten students who have filed for office this week join eight other candidates who are seeking elected positions. These students are as follows by office filed for: Roger McKinney, SGA president; Richard Sullins. SGA vice president; Ken Nifong, UCB president; Rebecca Lyn Finchum, UCB vice president; Robert D. Gathings, business manager of "The Western Carolinian"; and Rebecca Nelson, at-large senator. In addition, Al Lagano and Mark Wilkins will face each other in the race for editor of "The Western Carolinian." Revenge minded student causes havoc A WCU student apparently went to difficult lengths to move heavy objects, including a batting cage, in order to drive his car onto Ronnie G. Childress Field Tuesday morning causing some $200 in damage to the baseball playing surface. Tim Linville, a second semester transfer student, was arrested and charged with damaging state property. Sources say Linville was released shortly after the arrest and placed on $500 bail. Linville has since been suspended from WCU according to Glen Stiilion, vice chancellor of student development. He had been placed on "citizen probation" for an incident last semester and the arrest was violation of that probation, according to Stiilion. Most of the damage to the field was in the playing surface and repairs must wait until new grass is grown in the places ruined by the automobile. Sources indicated to the Western Carolinian that the damage may have been done as an act of revenge to WCU baseball Coach Bill Haywood. Linville was cut from the baseball team earlier this school year. Sat. Night Fever artist has works stolen from Belk Complied By AL LAGANO, News Editor and the WCU Office of Public Information Five art pieces by James McMillan were stolen from Belk Building late Sunday night or early Monday morning according to the WCU Office of Traffic and Security. The five pieces were limited reproductions of McMillan's work which had been on display for two weeks. The original works, which were valued at well over $1000 apiece, were removed from the gallery earlier in the week and replaced by the reproductions. However, some of the limited reproductions stolen were the last available reproductions on hand anywhere and their value were placed at approximately $1500 according to sources. The thieves apparently broke the glass frames surrounding the art works to remove the illustrations which were on display in the hallways outside of the Belk Art Gallery. WCU Office of Traffic and Security dusted for fingerprints on Monday but as of Wednesday no arrests were reported. McMullen, a highly acclaimed designer and illustrator whose work helped inspire the hit movie "Saturday Night Fever," is scheduled to present a series of lectures April 2 and 3 at Western as a part of the university's Visiting Scholars Program. A former director and vice president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, McMullen has produced illustrations and designs for a wide range of uses including magazines, record jackets, book covers, posters, advertisements and TV animation. His work has been displayed in numerous exhibits and in three one-man shows. McMullen will visit and lecture to several WCU art classes during his two-day stay, and he will present a lecture for the general public April 2 at 7 p.m. in the graphic design studio, Room 380, Belk Building. Among McMullen's recent work is a series of paintings of people in a Brooklyn discotheque. They were published in New York Magazine and became, with a story accompanying them by Nik Cohn, the basis of the film "Saturday Night Fever." Born in Tsingtao, North China, where his grandparents founded an Anglican Mission and orphanage, McMullen was educated in India, China, and Canada, later studying at Pratt Institute. McMullen works for his own organization, Visible Studio, Inc., of New York City. There is no admission charge for the public lecture. today. • • The results of the cafeteria food survey have been released, see page 6 for details. The big business of SGA Is featured by on page 3, along with a look at how the elections are shaping up. Bill St. John, below, drove to second place in his class In Saturday's sports car slalom. See today's centerspread for more on this event and the tubing race.
