  • The^festern Carolinian The Voice of the Students 20 PAGES THURSDAY FEB. 22,1979 Vol.XLIV, No. 22 CULLOWHEE, N.C. Flight of the Phoenix Phillips leaves U-92, headed for WRAQ WCU is playing musical station managers again. Jake Phillips resigned from the station manager's post Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. Program Director Mike Wix was quickly appointed to fill Phillips' post. Phillips had returned to Western only this semester to retake the helm after Dave MeElvein resigned last semester. Phillips had held the position before McElvein. As a matter of fact, Phillips was the only station manager WWCU had had until he left (the first time) last year. Phillips has taken a job with WRAQ in Asheville and will be working the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift, commonly referred to as the "housewife shift." Phillips accepted the job last Friday, but didn't officially resign until Tuesday because he had stayed in Asheville over the weekend and preferred to tell the staff in person. The main reason for Phillips' decision to leave was the chance to join WRAQ's sales staff in which Phillips says he is really interested. "There's big bucks to be h;id in radio management, but not in Cullowhee," Phillips jokingly remarked referring to his present managerial job at U-92 and his upcoming job at WRAQ. New Station Manager Mike Wix doesn't forsee any major changes in WWCU's format except he hopes to increase the amount of educational broadcasts. He feels,"We don't serve our license like we should," referring to the fact that WWCU is an educational station. Wix said he plans to try to involve the students more in their community with public affairs programs such as "Hotline." A musical format change is also in the offing for the station, according to newly appointed Program Director Dan Gaddy, who said the morning show will emphasize more gold music (hits of previous years) while the midday shift will remain basically intact and the early evening show (6-8 p.m.) will lean toward adult contemporary rock. According to Gaddy, this will allow a smoother transition into the late evening album oriented rock show (AOR). The AOR show also may undergo a format change as Gaddy and Wix are considering formatting the nighttime shows. Gaddy said that this would allot certain types of music for specific times of the evening. Wix said that he is now looking forward to his job but said that if it had been offered at an earlier time he probably would have refused. "There weren't a lot of people in line for the job," Wix said. Wix has worked at the station for the last 2 1/2 years, making him the elder statesman at the station with Phillips' resignation. Wix did not rule out the possibility of running or reelection but said he hoped to work at a summer internship for WRAQ (where he is presently working weekends) and hopes to graduate in December. The juggle of managers continues at U-92 with the newest addition to what one staff member called, "the suicide job." Phillips flies the coop? "Jakle in the mom" will no longer be the alarm clock of Cullowhee, for he has left U-92 for greener pastures. Now Jake will entertain bored housewives, rather than try to wake up 5,000 students who haven't had enough sleep. Rumor has It that Dave "Blink" McElvein is vying for his old 6 to 9 slot. Senate eyes misconduct By AL LAGANO News Editor A resolution to establish a senate investigatory committee to investigate (when needed) any charges of misuse of office, breech of ethics, misconduct and any other accusations directed toward SGA was introduced in the student senate last night by Senator Mark Asa and the office of vice president. The resolution stems from accusations made last semester toward SGA concerning the conduct of members of that body and problems involving such branches as Student Government Productions, the SGA courts, the executive offices, refrigerator leasing and other sections of SGA. According to the resolution, "...rumors and charges only serve to undermine the integrity and reputation of the Student Government Association in the opinions of the students of WCU and that this in itself is reason to investigate charges of this nature and clear the image of SGA." The committee, made up of five senators and the Attorney General of SGA, will remain inactive until called upon to act by the majority of the senate. It has the power only to make recommendations to the senate based on any information it uncovers and the power to subpoena any members of SGA necessary to make its investigation. The resolution was sent to the Committee on Rules and will be acted upon within the next few weeks. A resolution to establish motor pool guidelines was also introduced last night. This resolution would limit SGA approved clubs and organizations use of the motor pool to ten trips a semester as well as set up other guidelines for motor pool use. In other senate action, Senator Bobby Street was elected Senator Pro Tempore and Dan Deitz, Vanessa Aughtry and Chuck Russell were sworn in as new senators. Senator Keith Kolakowski's resignation was also accepted by the senate last night. The Carolinian Today ""Mike Wix is the new General Manager of WWC1FM. The third manager of the academic year, Wix promises no major surprises, but believes students should have more input. See details in this issue. The Cats go back into action this Saturday night in Reid Gym when they take on the Thundering Herd of Marshal University. See details on Page 4. ■^^^^■^"— 1
