  • PAGE 16/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/JANUARY 25, 1979 Carolinian opinion and commentary More rope... SGA loses in icebox caper "Win Real When You Can Bay!" This logo has appeared all over campus lately, Ihe topic of a campaign bj Pi Kappa Phi fraternity to sell dorm-si/cd refrigerator*, lo WCU students at ridiculously cheap rates. Sounds like a great idea, selling units for $3(1 which through the SGA Office of Refrigerator Leasing would cost $42 to rent for an academic year. The Pi Kappa Phi fund raising chairman must have a pretty good thing going, to be able to undercut SGA like that. But wait a minute... The Pi Kappa Phi fund raising chairman is none other than SGA's own vice president Phil Cates! (Remember him? He's the one with the nice gavel wc all paid for.) It seems that Phil arranged for his frat to purchase 100 refrigerators from somebody at UNC-Greensboro for $10 each. How (hey did this without going through the University of North Carolina open bid system is anybody's guess. The seller of state-owned equipment is supposed to put any equipment to be sold up for public bid, but Phil got by this somehow. One hundred units, at a profit of $20 per unit. Sounds like a net gain of about two grand for the Pi Kapps. Now if Phil could arrange such a maneuver for Pi Kappa Phi lo profit from, he sure could have arranged for SGA to do the same. Bui no, SGA (and you, the students) wasn't able to lake advantage of such a deal since Phil worked it out wilh his "brothers" instead. By Ihe way, profits collected In Refrigerator Leasing go into a general scholarship fund. Sounds like a conflict of interest lo me... Phil Cates will have lo decide where his priorities are, whether in SGA or in Pi Kappa Phi. I would suggest thai he become an icebox magnate for fraternities and get Ihe hell out of SGA. All welcome at OES Dear Editor, After reading the letter, "How about White Week." in the January 11 issue. I find it necessary to respond to some of the comments made by Mr. Maland. First, OES is an organization recognized by SGA and the administration like any other organization on campus. Most of the meetings, which arc held every two weeks, involve planning events which are in the general interest of Black students. Any or all students are welcome to join OES. Concerning the trip taken over fall break, I took the trip along with Mr. Bagley and it did not take longer than all of our "two school days and one weekend." Most of the schools visited were not on break as we were. I am also truly sorry that all students here at WCU are not happy with many of the social events lhat go on here. My suggestion is for WCU students to let the programming hoards such as SGA. LCE, SGP. etc. know what they waul as far as social or program events are concerned. These groups are supposed to work in tne interest oi the students, but of course everyone will not be satisfied. Sincerely, Steve Wilbom The Waihirmton St 12/19/78 "far if ASM The China Curd Lawing's strip to reappear? Dear Editor, That's not junk. That's my old strips. Dear Mr. Whitfield, Incredible! Somebody (besides my mommic) does care! Heavy sigh. Hopefully, it won't be long before ACOMICSTRIP embellishes these tired old pages once again. But. more than likely, it will not contain the same characters you've grown to know and...love? You see, I originally quit doing the strip in order to boycott the management at the Carolinian (over a problem that has since been solved). Then, while on leave, I realized that this wasn't my only reason for quitting. I decided, alas! that the strip needed a rest. It was getting old and cliche for me, although maybe not for others. Also, due to censorship pressures, which I deeply abhor. I felt that I could never justly say what I needed to say. 1 still feel this way. Lastly, if not foremost, I quit because 1 was not achieving the high degree of professionalism and craftsmanship that I could and should achieve. If censorship pressures are lifted, and if the management and I can agree on a just salery(sic) for my services, then I'm sure that I would love to return as a regular feature. In fact, if I wait much longer I may go through withdrawal symptoms. I'm afraid cartooning flows through my veins. Thanx for the support. Until then, Charlie Lawing Damn mud! Dear Editor. Everywhere I go around our beloved Cullowhee, people are bitching about all the construction that is happening on tampus. The problem is that they're bitching aboui the wrong thing. Construction is a necessary evil for a growing "university" such as WCU. We shouldn't have to put up with all this mud shit! I have worked construction before, and if we left the mess that the construction company is leaving in our beloved community, our crew would have.' been fired on the spot! In front of Harrill, a water main was repaired(l assume it was a water main since water was bubbling out of the ground). In order to repair this, a section of pipe was dug and repaired or replaced. When they put the dirt back into the hole, the crew did nothing to pack the dirt. As a result, the first time it rained, the biggest flood this side of Jimmie's Mini Market occurred. After the flood, the construction crew came back and threw more dirt on the hole (the ditch had sunk quite a few inches. How could this have been prevented? A machine called a tamp should have been used to pack down the dirt. Every construction company that 1 have worked for has had at least two tamps. My question is, why doesn't this company have (or at least rent) one of these tamps? This is also applicable to the ripping out of the parking lot beside Forsyth. Why didn't they put gravel back in the holes that they had dug up so we could use the parking lot? They apparently are not doing anything to the parking situtation right now .
